Winch mounting?

I was wondering if anyone has info on the dimensions of a winch. I built a bumper and I hope I'll be able to mount a winch to it. If I need to make mods to the bumper I will. I wouldn't be hard.

I know that the Warn winch plate lifts the winch above the sway bar, but how much space is needed front to back to fit it?

These are the dimensions of my bumper. The hoop is 8.75in tall.

i believe a pretty common pattern is 10" x 4.5"

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 06:14 PM

does that mean I'm 1in too short? Or will my bumper work w/ no mods?

nicolas-eric 09-08-2007 06:15 PM

take a look at my bumper.
i don´t think thaat you have enough room for a winch.
but with a modified winchplate it could fit.

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 06:16 PM

Any dimensions on that set-up Nick? Look like I'll have MORE than enough room.

NalinMFG 09-08-2007 06:17 PM

you may want an answer from someone with fabricating skills:doh:....or for that matter a winch:rofl: ive been looking at winches and bumpers for the last few weeks/months and all i can tell you is alot have the hole pattern 10"x4.5", wait and see what others have to say.

nicolas-eric 09-08-2007 06:21 PM

your tube with the light on it is too close to th egrille i think.
its only a few centimeters from the playstic sway-bar cover away.
i have much more room there.

my winch is 16 centimeters long, 54 cm wide and 22 high (without the relay-housing).

it´s the same winch than the smittybuilt 12.000 lbs winch.

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 06:22 PM

I have fabricating skills, so no prob there. I built that bumper and I plan on making the winch plate too. Just trying to get as much info as possible. :D

nicolas-eric 09-08-2007 06:23 PM

nearly all winches have the same hole pattern. but their whole size is a bit different.

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 06:26 PM

Well if I need to move that bar up a little I can do that. From the way it sounds I might need to do just that. If thats ALL I have to do, I think I didn't do too bad then.

nicolas-eric 09-08-2007 06:32 PM

you can only use the four bolts from the bumper for the winch plate.
for that the lightbar must be moved to the front.

the winchplate needs that much room:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/upload/579647.jpg

and all winches i know need 20-22". 17" is not enough.

:wavey:

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 07:18 PM

Ok... I guess the only thing to do is to get the winch and make the mods as needed. Worst case, I move the bar to the very front of the bumper or make another one. Thank you.

nicolas-eric 09-08-2007 07:25 PM

i would get rid of this bar and make a new one that´s a bit wider. that one i would weld on top of the winchplate left and right beside the winch.

take a look again at my pic.
if you install a flat steel plate as a winch plate on your bumper the sway bar would be a problem. you need a higher winchplate. or a plate that goes more to the front of the car. but then the winch plate is in front of the bumper.

You should have bought a winch plate and incorporated it into the bumper while building it. Your more than likely going to have to push your bumper out a bit for the winch plate to fit. Just have to drill some new mounting holes. But buy a winch plate and go from there. Measurements are one thing, but having the thing in your hand is even better.

Levinoss 09-08-2007 08:38 PM

Rip I told you not to add that bar =P

Just remove the bar and go with something more like this.

I'll get the winch plate and incorerate it into the design. This will be an easy enough fix. If I built it, then modifying it shoundn't be too hard.

Nick, I knew the wich plate needed to be elevated over the sway bar.

foxinthemudd 09-08-2007 09:13 PM

hey rip do you want me to go take a pic of my mount and winch set-up? to give you more of an idea of how they sit on a stock bumper?

rketr 09-08-2007 09:15 PM

Here's an idea for you (and works well :D):

I took my winch plate and made it wide enough and forward enough so that I could use the 4 bumper mounting bolts (grade 8) to hold it in place. Cool part is that when I'm not wheeling and just want to daily driver it, I pull 4 bolts, take the winch off, put the 4 bolts back on, and save 100+ lbs on the front of the ride. (helps with MPG) Also, when mounted it is hooked directly to the frame and has no real chance of twisting the plate. I'll see if I can come across a pic or two...

Nicolas -> have you had any problems with your mounting plate flexing, wraping, or twisting? The plate looks a little thin...

foxinthemudd 09-08-2007 09:32 PM

I hope these help with something... the winch is a warn 9000i stock bumper, with a warn winch mounting plate on it. connectes for the forward most bolt and attaches to the other bumper bolts. (not trying to talk down I'm sure that you already know way more than me master fab man :D but theres the info anyway.)

Sell the bumper you have, for like $150, and make another with a built in winch plate

X2 ^

Sounds like a great idea, but I need to see it.

RIPBiker13 09-08-2007 11:47 PM

If I rebuild the bumper, I'll do one like this...

RIPBiker13 09-09-2007 02:23 PM

I got it all figured out. My bumper is the right size to mount a winch and more than strong enough too. The problem is the hoop. When I get the winch, I'll cut off the hoop and make a new one to fit around the winch, and I'll build a winch plate into the bumper at that time. I'll weld it in and I'll use 1/4in plate for the plate as well. I thank you all for your input.

sounds good. just remember the pics durring and after. :D

rketr 09-09-2007 05:20 PM

Actually went out and took a few pics.

This is a bumper I put together last year. Total cost is like $35. Consisted of a 2"x4"x0.250" square tube cut to around 39" or so. Then welded to a couple 4"x4"x0.250 angles to create the mount points to hook to the frame. 6 grade 8 bolts later and we're done.

Here's the overall pic:
http://www.3cranch.org/gallery/main....m&g2_itemId=95

A pic of the winch plate mounted to the frame:
http://www.3cranch.org/gallery/main....m&g2_itemId=98
Note the red plug behind the winch. That is a Warn quick disconnect. I put it in so when I remove the winch (2 bolts on either side as shown) I disconnect it and don't have to worry about any more wiring.

Another of the winch and bumper:

Winch wire is wrapped around the whole thing just 'cause I'm lazy and didn't recoil it last time I needed a little

hmmm...having trouble posting pics...what is the secret?

rketr 09-09-2007 05:40 PM

Lets try this again on another site:
