Steering Wheel is not Straight on my 97 TJ

Steering Wheel is not Straight on my 97 TJ

I just pick up a 97 TJ Sport with 133k. The alignment is good but in order to track well I have to keep the steering wheel at about 2 o'clock. I do have a little play in the steering.

How do I fix it?

Is it a pricey fix?

Thanks,

Steve

That's a very easy non-technical fix you can do on your own in just a few minutes with just a wrench and pliers.

That you have to hold the steering wheel at 2 o'clock means it would steer to the left if the steering wheel was held in the centered position. That means the steering's drag link that connects the axle to the steering box's Pitman arm is too short. Lengthen the drag link by rotating its 6" length adjustment collar, per the instructions towards the bottom of the page at Basic Jeep Front End Alignment

Click on that small photo of the front-end to make it big enough to find the drag link.

It will take several iterations of you lengthening the drag link (maybe shortening it if you go a little too far) and test-driving it until you get it perfectly straight. Don't tighten the adjustment link's lock bolts for each test drive but don't forget to tighten them securely once you're happy with the steering wheel's position.

If I recall correctly, you rotate that length adjustment sleeve so the front of it moves downward to lengthen the drag link. Don't shoot me if I remembered that direction backwards. :p

This is an easy one-banana job that a novice mechanic can take on. :)

Big time thanks.

I will give it a try and let you know how it turns out. My next day off is a few days away so its going to take me a little time to try it. It does look easy.

I love DIY, they are the best price.
