30x9.5 or 31x10.5
 
Need new rubber this fall for my daily, 100 mile rt commute, driver. Can anyone tell me how much fuel economy I will lose going to 31x10.5. I currently get 19-20 mpg with my 30x9.5's when I drive 65 mph and gas $$ is killing me. I do have the original tires in storage but like the look of my BFG AT's. And they wear like iron, two of them came off my YJ and have over 120k on them.

If you're concerned with MPGs, don't change what is working.. Years ago I took that leap with a 97 TJ 4 banger, and lost a little over a mile per gallon ,,

I'm currently running 31s & considered dropping down a size next round for the same reason. However, looking at your mileage I think I may stick with the 31s. Last fill up I hit 19.44mpg, which is my best yet. I've never broken 20, but I also tend to to drive 70+ on the interstate.

I have the Good Year Wrangler DuraTracs in 31x10.5x15 and just got 15.55 miles per gallon around town. My TJ has the 4.0 and a 5 speed manual. On the highway mpg is about 17-18 and I usually drive about 70 mph. Hope this helps.

Get 31's... Just cause:) They don't get a lot worse gas mileage than 30's and they look a ton better... But I am a teenager concerned with appearances...So you might not want to listen to me:angel:

I am still a teenager in my mind even thought i renewed my aarp card for the third time. I like the look of the 31's over the 30's.

31x10.50 duratracs and I still get 19mpg in my 06 6sp. Great tires, look good, ride good, wheel good!

I went from the stock 30" tires to 31" BFG AT's. I didn't notice much difference in mpg. I recently switched to 31" MT MTZ tires and I'm trying to see how much my mileage dropped. I was averaging 18 mpg. I have an 04 Sport with a 4.0 and manual 5 speed.

How do u guys get that type of millage??? I just dont understand. I haven't gotten over 17 mpg in about 5years, and that was downhill with the wind behind me... Btw, I have 31's and wish I had gotten 33's.

Extremely slow starts, shift at or under 2,000 rpm unless going up a hill, while cruising stay in highest gear possible untill I need to accelerate, drive under 64mph, Coast to stop as much as possible.
Now if I was running late alot and had to haul butt or spent alot of time on interstate at 70-80mph I would get 15-16mpg or so. But if I could take my time and enjoy the ride and just cruise nice and slow, I would get 18-19mpg. 3.07s dont hurt as far as MPGs either,

Same here, in fact the 18 wheelers pass me on the hills sometimes. I stopped being in a rush to get anywhere, espically the office.

Everytime i take off from a stop light, i practically get rearended when shifting from first to second because the fools behind me wont leave enough following distance. It is just a matter of time before a driver is texting and doesnt hit the brakes in time. :banghead:

Thanks for the tips guys.... I understand the techniques for getting better mpg but my jeep just won't listen. It went down hill around the time they added the methanol to the fuel. Or was it when I added the 2" lift... Or maybe both. Either way glad someone is getting good millage.

Bit the bullet today and got my 31x10.5 BFG AT's installed. Alignment checked and is good, ran perfect on the highway on the way home (no DW). Possible 6-10 inches of the white stuff so tomorrow should be fun.

its coming down already, this sucks, my 31 x 10.5 x15s are going on on tuesday. my 30s will have to do for this slushy crap

My 30's were pretty worn and would have been useless in thesnow.

i have about another 15k miles are least left on mine, selling to a friend for 100$, got 5- 31 x 10.5 x 15s for 300$ with probly closer to 25k miles left on them

I don't know what kind of steel wheels and 30" tires I had on mine when I bought it, but with a 15 gallon tank, I had to fill up after 230 miles. I put on stock alloy wheels from a 2005 Rocky Mountain edition with 30" tires and now can drive up to 296 miles on a tank. That seems good considering I have the 4.0 with the auto three speed transmission. I would like to go with a mild 2.5" lift and BFG 31's but I'll keep it "stock" for the two reasons of its my DD and when I get back to Illinois I won't need a lift for where I'm going and I don't want to ruin the auto transmission.

i get about 13mpg in town and 19mpg on the highway if its strictly one or the other. if its a combo of both is get around 16mpg. i have the 4.0 and a 6spd with 3.73 gears with 30 x 9.5 x 15s

I might be wrong ...but.... doesn't having taller tires make the engine rev less and is therefore good for long highway drives?

I have 30x9.5 that are worn out and the shop had 31x10.5 Wranglers on sale for $60 off each tire so I took the plunge. I know a larger tire will mean more weight and less milage, but most of my driving is highway so i was hoping to save a little with less revs at highway speed. if not they will still look cool :-)

Will those fit on the same rims? I have the 30x9.5s, and wanted something a little 'beefier' without having to invest in hardware. Will the 31s simply go on the same rims?

Yes the 31s will fit on the same wheel. You might have to adjust the steering stops if the tires rub at full lock turns
