Anyways, what a time to have quit drinking, this would have been my favorite month.

What's the difference Between Bourbon and like Segrams 7 or Canadian Club I like most wiskey but always thought it was all Bourbon.

MouthfulOfGrass 09-12-2007 01:01 PM

Bourbon is an American form of whiskey named for Bourbon County, Kentucky. By United States law, it consists of at least 51% corn — typically about 70% — with the remainder being wheat and/or rye, and malted barley. It is distilled to no more than 160 (U.S.) proof, and aged in new charred oak barrels for at least two years. The two years maturation process is not a legal requirement for a whiskey to be called "bourbon," but it is a legal requirement for "straight bourbon." However, in practice, most bourbon whiskeys are aged for at least four years.

Bourbon must be put into the barrels at no more than 125 U.S. proof. After aging it is diluted with water and bottled. Bottling proof for whiskey must be at least 80 proof (40% abv) and most whiskey is sold at 80 proof. Other common proofs are 86, 90, 94, 100 and 107, and whiskeys of up to 142 proof have been sold. Some higher proof bottlings are "barrel proof."

Bourbon can legally be made anywhere in the United States where it is legal to distill spirits. Legitimate production is not restricted to Kentucky, although currently all but a few brands are made there, and the drink is associated strongly with that commonwealth.[1] Illinois once produced nearly as much bourbon whiskey as Kentucky, and bourbon continues to be made in Virginia. In the past bourbon has been made in Pennsylvania, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri and Kansas.

Seagrams & or "Canadian" whiskey are mixtures of several different batches of whiskey spirits to smooth them out and neutralize the character.

I've sampled my share of most of the high end single style spirits available, and Bourbon came out my favorite. I like the very slight sweetness, and the vanilla-ish aftertaste. I found it to be a most pleasant sipping drink that you don't have to mix with something or water down or freeze to make it taste good (like vodka).
The only other drink I've enjoyed as much was Pernod, but it's a flavored liquore (don't know how to spell it but it's pronounced lih-cure), it's an herbal drink that's not sweet. Kinda like Jaegermeister but not nearly as sweet.

The worlds most expensive bourbon: Evan Williams 23 yo

$350 - $450 a bottle, not available in U.S. UK, France, and Japan only. I have 3/4 of a bottle left, trust me, it's worth every penny! A vendor gave me a bottle from London as a thank you gift.

02Prove 09-12-2007 04:16 PM

Not available in the US and made in Kentucky. There's just something unAmerican about that.

MouthfulOfGrass 09-12-2007 04:23 PM

Someone somewhere is alway willing to pay way too much for something. Same reason we don't see California Spiny Lobster in our local markets. Japan is willing to pay way too much more than it's worth to try to sell 'em to locals.

02Prove 09-12-2007 04:53 PM

I like a fine bourbon but 70-80 bucks max is about as high as I'll go.
