front axle rebuild or salvage

Hey guys. I am asking about my first Jeep. I have had it for a week. 1994 YJ. When I test drove it I heard a noise from the front end and hoped it would be the wheel bearings. Now that I've gotten under it and checked the diff. it was bone dry. Don't know how long the PO drove it dry but it is pretty loud. topped it off and found the rear seal is leaking the fluid pretty good (thanks goodness I got a good deal on the jeep.) Noise is still there even after the oil was added. I talked to the local jeep mechanic (20 years experience and I know him pretty well) and he said it would be about $850 to rebuild it. Should I go that route or buy a salvage one and put it in myself. Let me also add I am eager to work on it myself but I have NO experience. Any advice would be GREAT!! Thanks everyone. Jeep on.

Rebuild it. With chromolley axle shafts and a locker if you want.

Dana 30's are easy to find. But if you plan on wheeling or going bigger, might as well use this as an oppurtunity to build it up with chromoly shafts, gears, and a locker.

if the YJ is not your DD, DIY rebuild on a new housing. dana 30s are a dime a dozen its not worth working on one that is trashed. I'd try and pick up a 96-99 Cherokee front axle and build that over a CAD YJ axle

If's it's a dd and your not going huge on the tires just find a direct replacement and swap it. You can probably get a good one for under $200.

A cherokee axle would be nice too but really you have to do some welding work to convert it from coil to leaf.

I picked up a 4:10 geared stocker out of a 4 cylinder for $150 on craigslist.

If you plan on wheeling it, build a nice one for it later, a craigslist axle can get you on the road for now.

My Opinion....

Cheaper to simply eliminate the CAD with one piece shafts. Cherokee axles, although still HP fronts have spring perches and will require a lot of grinding and welding.

Additionally, to answer the ops question... Yes, you can pick up a salvage D30 cheap, but it's more labor intensive to swap out one axle for another than it is to simply regear.

Thanks for all the advice! Here is a few updates. I had a mechanic close by look at it. I was pretty sure what needed to be done but not sure why. So the PO I guess had exchanged the front axle at some point. He put in a dana super 30 (you guys can probably tell me more but the drive shaft enters on top of the diff rather than the bottom) but didn't pay attention to the gears. The rear has 4.10 and the front has 3.xx (75 i think). Can you really tell which gears are inside the axle without taking it apart? So the mechanic here said a rebuild with new bearings, 4.10 gears, new actuator, and a couple more things was going to be $1200. I'm not sure that is a job I can handle my self.

Too much to spend IMHO. Just find a salvage HighPinion(what you have now) d30 with the right gear ratio LOL!

X2 just go to a good wreaking yard, tell them what you need, if they don't have it they can get in, should be less than $500. make them pull the cover and look it over. Done!
