Why no audio controls on Steering Wheel? 2012

It sucks that there is no audio controls on steering wheel. Why is that:confused:

I love me 2012 Sahara.....it is buttery smooth

Smshly616 09-29-2011 11:34 PM

What an awesome surprise!! My first car was a Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder and it had audio controls on the back of the steering wheel. The sales guy never told us about them. I was cleaning out my car in the garage one day and noticed them, it was like Chirstmas!!

Slightly off topic: if you have the doors locked and attempt to open door from inside what happens?

My wife has a Murano, which we are trading for her 2012, and the doors remained locked. You have to manually unlock. And it annoys hell out of me.

The drivers or front seat passenger doors open, no problem. The rear doors can be set not to open when locked to protect kids IIRC.

While they do have some audio controls on the back, the choices of what is actually controlled for the radio is pretty piss-poor. No one really thought about it much. No mute button? You can only cycle forward through all 12 presets? And I don't know about y'all, but I don't "seek" through stations ever. But apparently it's a big deal with two buttons devoted to it. Even GM figured out what to include for audio controls (at least on my old GTO).

Nadurra 09-30-2011 08:29 AM

Ha ha ha...yeah...they are on there...around the back:-) Took me a couple hours to find them as well.

Don't feel like the Lone Ranger, I still mess them up and still getting used to them.

The Grand Cherokee has them there too, I actually like it better that way, more intuitive gripping the back of the wheel

Merlin75 10-22-2011 08:29 AM

Can I take a 12 wheel and retrofit it on an 09 to get these controls? That's the only thing I'm missing on my JKUR.

When I do that the horn starts honking like an alarm

Steering wheel audio controls don't work

So my steering wheel audio controls stopped working today. Another post on this site said to honk the horn and it will reset the controls. It worked! Apparently there is no fix, so if you're audio controls stop working just honk your horn.

to cycle only forward is a bit annoying. i find myself using the touch screen more than the back buttons. i only listen to the same 4 am stations and 2 sirius channels tho.

about unlocking the door. i would think if u set the alarm then unlock by hand from the inside then open the door it would activate the alarm since in the book its says the only way to deactivate the alarm is with the key fob or inserting the key in the ignition and turn to accessory mode.

Animal Chicken 06-24-2012 07:16 PM

I was asking the same question until I happened upon them by chance today.

My other cars have mute button but since I don't play CD (which might take more time spin up the CD again?) but only USB, I found it's useless when you can do the same using the power button.

The power button in fact is better because it will resume from where your music is stopped, but the mute button will keep playing for no reason but not going to resume.

Ha as I was driving away from the dealership with mine, I was listening to my SAT radio and the channel turned "by itself". So I reached over and turned it back. Then later it changed again. I was convinced there was something wrong with the radio as it kept changing on its own apparently. As I sat at a light, I felt the bumps on the back and pressed it and low and behold, it changed again! LOL I felt like a retard since the sales guy omitted that feature in conversation, but then excited that I had those controls. If only there was a mute and power on/off.

Every once in awhile I accidentally hold it down and find myself 20+ channels away

AZduck 06-26-2012 11:21 PM

yeah - I 'find' them all the time too, especially when turning.

PA ARCTIC 06-27-2012 06:24 AM

like them. but agree. a mute/on/off would have been great.

JeepHerz 06-27-2012 12:26 PM

Our Infinity has paddle shifters on the back of the steering wheel. My husband keeps trying to shift our Jeep by changing the radio station. Silly boys.

CA3 06-28-2012 05:42 PM

My stereo started playing music the other day that I recognized but the radio wasn't showing a station. I was like, "WTH?" It was streaming from my iPhone. I didn't realize the N130 had the streaming capability. Talk about Christmas!

Yea they aren't that great

LMH 06-28-2012 06:24 PM

I discovered them and didn't tell my husband they were there. Then when we took a trip in the "new Jeep" - me driving- he went to change the stations and I had some fun with it. He said, "MAN! These controls are sensitive!!" I stopped, and then when he found a song, I said, "OH I LOVE THIS SONG!!" and turned it up. He caught on what was going on. I suggest you guys have some fun with them first before letting the cat out of the bag. :-)
