Smittybilt soft top review.
When I first got my 97 TJ the top was completely worn out by the previous owner, so I took all the windows off and the doors and just had it like this all summer.
Well the weather started to get a little cooler, and a lot rainy lately, so I decided to order a replacement top. I looked online and found a Smittybilt full replacement top with soft windows, for $265.00 on I did a little bit of online checking around, and most of the people said they liked theirs, so I ordered one for myself.
This is the box the UPS man delivered.
The first thing I did was remove the last bit of the old soft top, then I layed it out in the driveway as a clean soft place to work on.
Inside the box was an installation manual, and the top and windows. Everything was rolled up and seperated from eachother with tissue paper between each piece.
The quality of the material was a lot better than I had expected!

The instructions were helpful, and everything installed with a lot of tugging and pulling, this top fits really tight! Here's some pics of the finished installation.
My two heeps.
Over all I'm very impressed with this top, it fits nice and tight, it's made out of strong fabric with good stitching, the zippers are buttery smooth, and it looks really good in my opinion. I guess the only thing now is to see how long it lasts. For $265.00 I think it's a smoking deal!

Looks just like the stock soft top. Jeep looks great. Sounds like a great deal

Thanks! As long as it keeps the weather out of the inside of my Jeep I'll be happy :thumb: Running around all summer with the windows and doors off apparently allowed enough dirt to get into my Jeep, that with the past few weeks of rain we've had here, there are little plants growing up out of my carpet, lol :D

Just installed my Smittybilt, and your review helped my decision even though it is a bit old. For the sake of keeping the thread fresh for other googlers, I wanted to reply and say thank you.

It was tight as hell!. I can't really give it a pro or no yet, as I just got it installed. You weren't kidding about being tight. Thank you.

Mine should be on the porch when I get home, I heard that you should lay it in the sun for an hour to help it stretch a bit more. Did you do this? I don't know when the sun will be shining here

I hated mine, thin material, noisy, never fit right and when the weather warmed up the windows would be really soft. The rear zipper seperated from the top (about 2-3 inches) on the upper driverside corner.

Good luck, maybe the material changed from then until now.

Hope you guys have better luck long term because my rear window zipper issues started after only 3 mos. After many frustrating attempts with new zippers, beeswax, etc.. I removed my soft top completely and threw it in the attic. Now going with a safari/CRES and love it. Although Smittybilt did send me a brand new softtop for my window troubles, I threw the unopened box in the attic not wanting to go through with that window issues again. I may eventually just sell it.

Forgot to mention that I had that top for a total of 4 months brfore removing it. I recently sold it on craigslist and will be buying a frameless or hardtop
