Question about winch and rope ratings?

Hello, I'm confused with winch and rope ratings. On a wrangler that is under 4k lb i'd imagine a 4k lb winch should be able to pull it right out but then why are people running 8k and 9k lb winches on their wrangler? I'm seeing similar numbers on the ropes too. Any info to straighten my confusing is welcome.

Thanks.

ok if you pulled a wrangler with a winch that had a 4k rating it would be able to pull a jeep on flat dry land yes.. but when your stuck you have to pull yourself out and pull your tires out of the suction created.. also alot of times your pushing dirt out with ya. so you need a bigger winch. make since

The rule of thumb is a winch that has a capacity of at least 2x the vehicle you're pulling. When on in incline however it's 4x so you'd want an 8k winch minimum.

also if it needs to pull u over a rock, then it has to force one side of the axle up and over the rock, and up hill, and though mud... so 8k is what most ppl get

I've stalled out a 9k winch before trying to dead pull a cherokee up over a waterfall.

if you get stuck in really deep mud (3ft or more) you need much more than the car weight to pull it out.
i´ve seen a little suzuki that could´t get ou with a 8k winch.
he needed a

to get out (how do you call that in english...?).
that´s why i decided to buy a 12k winch.

on hard trophys through poland, czech rebublic or russia (very very +4 ft deep mud) like the dresden-breslau, they install winches with 4-5x as much power than the full loaded offroader weights.

That's a Snatch Block Nicolas.

Very effective tool.

What is a snatch block and how does it work?? And I understand that a snatch block is the thing in the picture so no one has to point that out for me!!:flipoff:

you use it like this:

http://jeep.cfasp.de/upload/594589.jpg

on that way your winch has the double power. but it needs twice more time becaus it has to winch the double rope for the same distance.

LOL i always thought those weights were pulling something straight up for example you tie something to a stop light or a tree or whatever and it pulls you up...

take a look at this freeware:

http://www.dirfile.com/off_the_road_...calculator.htm

if there´s deep mud and the angle is big enough you need much more winch load than the TJ weights.
btw. my TJ with full tank and without any persons weights about 5000 lbs. two persons and the things i need off the road are some more 750-1000 lbs.

the cable on my winch has 5 layers. on the lower layer it does winch 12.000 lbs. on the upper layer it does only 6670 lbs.

you can see that a 12.000 lbs winch isn´t that wrong for a TJ.

and think about winching a heavier offroader than a small TJ. most of my friends have landrovers or mercedes G that weight 7000 lbs and more.

for that my 12.000 lbs winch is enough most of the time, but sometimes we need to use a snatch block because we need more power.

nicolas-eric 09-20-2007 09:38 PM

here you can see that my 12.000 lbs (6.670 lbs on upper layer) winch isn´t strong enough for my TJ in all situations. only on the lowest 2 layers it would be strong enough for that.
