rebuilding my YJ...where to start?

hi guys, ive got a '92 model YJ that i plan to rebuild but i have no idea where to start. a little back ground on the vehicle, ive had it for almost 4 years and at first it ran like a charm (has small block 350), but after the 1st tune up its not been the same...it backfires thru the carb, has gone thru 2 starters and 2 batteries, it will run but has to be jump started it has trouble cranking if you just turn the switch (this is even a problem with new starter and battery). it really is a pretty bad ass mud rig, along with the small block 350 its got 4" suspension lift and 3" body sitting on 35's. i really want to get it back on the road but i have no clue where to start. any of you guys have any pointers? thanks in advance.

Is there a possibiality that you have some wires crossed? Maybe some carb issues. I wish I had a 350 in mine.

i dont think i have any wires crossed, im thinking a stuck valve. having the 350 is amazing, aside from turning quite a few heads in my area its also pretty impressive in the trails. i also want to rewire and relocate my fuse box, but again, i have no clue where to start.

Have you run a vacuum test yet? If you do, you are looking for more than what the needle is maintaining. You have to have the "normal" reading and if the needle is moving at all, and how it is moving. The test is taking at normal idle, while the motor is warmed up.

Let me know what you observe.

Take care,

There is where you start.Something is obviously wrong in your tune up.Start over and pull the distributor cap off and find TDC on the number 1 cylinder then see it the rotor is in the right spot to fire that cylinder. It could be off a tooth or 3 to be indexed right on the cam drive gear.Make sure the plug wires are in the correct order on the cap too.

I agree with kmanator. If this is when your problems started, then you need to backtrack a little. A carb'd 350 is pretty simple, it just needs fuel and spark. The backfiring through the carb definately could be a timing issue.
