Is the transfer case interchangeable?

Just curious to know if an NP 231 transfer case out of a dodge (or any other rig) is the exact same as one out of a jeep? Are there any potential differences?

If I buy a used TC, what should I be looking for to know that I'm not buying one that's been trashed? If I have a choice between one that's come out of a dodge 1500 vs. another jeep, should I go with the jeep?

I see a guy with 2 on craigslist and he's asking $100 for each.

the dodge and jeep np231 are interchangeable. There is also a dodge NP231DHD and I "think" it may fit also in the jeep. It uses a .5" wider chain.

Cool. Any tips on how to evaluate a used transfer case? Or should I just be prepared to rebuild one?

We have only one vehicle and i'm wondering if I should buy a used one and rebuild it to install in the jeep in an afternoon, or if I could remove / rebuild / reinstall my existing transfer case over a couple days without much of a hassle. I've never done it, but it doesn't sound too rough from what I've read.

Of course, if I could just buy a used one and install on the jeep, that would be great too, but it would be real nice to know whether it is in good shape or not.

If it were me, I'd try to find a used one and rebuild it. That's just me, but I know me. I'd break something and have to go to the parts store and my vehicle would be all to pieces. Ask me how I know. Taking the bus to and from Autozone is unpleasant to say the least.:hide:

the rear case half and internals are interchangeable between the 231s how ever the front input and how it is clocked is not.

The Chevy/GM np231 have the 5 bolt front face half and are not compatible with the dodge and jeep 6 bolt pattern. But I think the dodge and the jeep are identical.

*now you've got me doubting myself. Original poster... better check on that if it is not too late.

You cant go wrong with a rebuilt one, essentially the same as new, just cheaper!
