ummm, 5 speed or auto???? if its an auto just leave the o/d on and it will shift into it when its ready... the computer is designed to give the vehicle the best possible fuel milage...which isnt very much but thats what is designed to do.. if your talking about a 5spd, well i'm usually in 5th around 35-40mph provided its flat ground...

^^^ Really? I have the auto in my '05 LJ and it will shift into overdrive going up steep hills following slow vehicles. Not exactly fuel efficient. I keep od turned off most of the time unless i'm on dead flat roads. I get tired of it constantly hunting and seeking between gears under any kind of load. Doesn't happen with OD off. Just my .02 but, the 42rle sucks.

Ok, wll on most vehicles that's how they are designed..... Maybe I should be glad I have the nv3550....

But the OP didn't really give that much info so I gave the answer that is correct for 90 percent of the time.... I don't yet have an auto jeep so I guess on hill it's not worth using OD...

Thanks guys,
I actually have an 09, its an automatic... and O/D seems to come on automatically. So, that means I should just leave it on all the time for fuel economy?

You want the tranny to downshift and keep the engine in it's power band. A lugging engine will kill your mileage. I agree the 42rle is a mess. Most turn O/D off from what I hear.
