Smittybuilt Winch.. WTH?

Smittybilt*

I've been f'ing with this thing since I got it 2 months ago.. It just won't wind up. Just a little bit ago I was out tinkering with the Jeep and decided to try it again. So I pull the rope out a bit and try to put it back in and nothing. I get a whining noise and that's it.

Then I started seeing smoke. wtf.

What's wrong/What do I do about this??

Sorry to hear that....yet another reason I would never buy a winch other than Superwinch or Warn.

HowardJ 10-17-2011 07:39 PM

Yeah, it came with the Jeep. If it were up to me, which I'm sure it's going to be I'm going Warn I do believe.
I just don't know if this is fixable? A short maybe?
I have absolutely no idea.

grnd93 10-17-2011 07:39 PM

Have you inquired about a warranty replacement? Mine works just fine

XJ Knight 10-17-2011 07:39 PM

bad unit??? Return on waranty

HowardJ 10-17-2011 07:44 PM

I don't know anything about it. The guy I bought the Jeep from already had it on there, said he used it a couple times. But he bought the Jeep new in '07 and I don't know how old the winch is?
Smittybilt isn't lifetime warranty, right?

grnd93 10-17-2011 07:54 PM

Probably not still covered, but worth a call to their tech support guys

CrazyBull 10-17-2011 07:57 PM

I won't buy a Warn, ever. I wanted the superwinch but settled on the XRC-10 procomp due to budgeting concerns. I just hope it doesn't come back to haunt me at the wrong moment.

kinda nice that they are local 2.

I wont run anything but warn or superwinch. I blew up a bulldog have seen more then a few cooked smittys and pro comp (same winch both owned by 4wd hardware's parent company)

when it comes to winches you get what you pay for and how you maintain them

jkaufman_95 10-17-2011 08:08 PM

Ouch. Sorry to hear. At least call and see. Next call is to warn/ superwinch. I personally run a warn.

XJ Knight 10-17-2011 08:14 PM

I should add I've never owned a winch but know 3 people personally with smittybilts and none to have any issues yet.. 2 with 8k and the other with a 10k.. This is the first bad i've heard about them forum or otherwise outside of the fact most don't like where there made

CrazyBull 10-17-2011 10:29 PM

Well, its still on its way. So I could return it and pay the difference at Quadratech. I did like that superwinch 9.5. lol, its that or blow money on an ARB freezer I really don't need. The UPS guy is asking..so what are you building, a MOAB monster or what? No, just the perfect camping vehicle I won't get stuck in the backwoods in.

Blow money on the arb freezer. That's a TON of money to blow.

Good point there...

HowardJ 10-17-2011 11:33 PM

I don't care what brand I have really.. As long as it does what it's supposed to do, I'm happy. I hope it's just a short? I'm going to look at it tomorrow when I get off work.
Did I mention I HATE electronics? Because I really do. >:[

So.. Get a hydraulic winch?

HowardJ 10-17-2011 11:52 PM

I haven't even looked at anything yet.. The first thing I really even want to do is get 33" tires back on it and get black rims. Just need money!
The I'm bedlining the floorboards

Just don't know anything about winches and was wondering of anybody else had this problem. I can live without it.. For now.. I just don't like having things that don't work!

CrazyBull 10-18-2011 02:15 AM

My neighbor has 2 burros out in his pasture. Maybe I'll just kidnap them, throw em in and use them to pull my tail out of any jams.

I didn't say I would per se'. I'd rather have the freezer. I'm so tired of getting ice and having stuff sogged up. But 800 bucks for a fancy cooler..damn. Not a problem with winter camping, just jam stuff in the snow. But in a hot utah desert in July?

True... But $800 for a cooler!!!

XJ Knight 10-18-2011 02:27 AM

Mini fridge with a adapter to run it from the cig lighter or do some kind of fancy rig up to power it..

CrazyBull 10-18-2011 02:44 AM

For 800 bucks the bloody thing should come with a margarita/daquiri frozen drink attachment + a blender. Granted you can get travel fridges for around 80 dollars but I hear the quality is real shoddy.

XJ Knight 10-18-2011 02:45 AM

For 800 bucks it should come with all of that and a bartender

97wrangler-242 10-18-2011 03:46 AM

I run a Superwinch lp8500. Very affordable and has yet to disappoint

HowardJ 10-18-2011 04:56 PM

I'm at my breaking point. After attempting to unscrew three bolts to humanely take the whole winch off the bumper.. They were all so rusty they just broke off.
I want the winch GONE. I can't get it off the bumper. The bumper looks like it goes all the way to the back of the Jeep (exaggerating) I need to take the bumper off anyway. The way the bumper is, I don't know how in the hell the guy that put the winch on got the two bolts in the back on. -_-
EVERY bolt is so rusted they won't come off like they should.

*needs a beer.

JeepAddOns-Chris 10-20-2011 01:48 PM

PB Blaster is your friend. I never take any bolt off until it has been soaked by the stuff. Depending on the bolt, it may even get sprayed every day for a week.
