Poison Spyder TrailGate™

http://pix.poisonspyder.com/Vehicles...0-071579-L.jpg

Tired of the limited functionality of your Jeep's swing-out tailgate? Do you yearn for the convenience and functionality of the drop-down tailgates from back in the day? Looking to shed a few pounds while gaining a smooth new look for your trail rig? The Poison Spyder TrailGate™ replaces your Jeep's heavy, cumbersome swing-out tailgate with a lightweight, sleek, aluminum drop-down gate and Tramp Stamp™. The complete TrailGate™ kit includes the aluminum TrailGate™ panel, lower Tramp Stamp™ heavy duty hinges, locking flush-mount latches, limiting cables, brackets, weatherstrips and hardware.

The drop-down TrailGate™' restores classic "tailgating" functionality to your Jeep. Use it as a convenient seat at outdoor events, or as a lunch prep table for those stops along the trail. It even works great as a temporary work bench for performing those on-site trail repairs. The TrailGate™'s smooth exterior surface gives the back of your Jeep a smooth, clean appearance, which looks great by itself and even better when used in conjunction with a pair of Poison Spyder Crusher Corners™! If you already have our Crusher Corners, you may cover the hinge cut-outs with the optional Tailgate Hinge Delete Covers (available soon, to be sold separately--not part of the standard kit).

The gate panel is CNC laser-cut and precision brake-formed from 3/16" aluminum plate. The Tramp Stamp™ piece is CNC laser-cut from the same 3/16" aluminum plate, featuring the Poison Spyder logo across the center. The Tramp Stamp™ and cable brackets install using nut-serts, which are provided in the complete hardware kit, along with stainless steel button head fasteners. The high quality latches are lockable (keys are included) and sit flush when closed to maintain the sleek profile of the TrailGate™

How strong is it? We won't give it a weight rating but it's proven itself to be very strong in our testing here at the Spyder Compound. It will easily hold the weight of a 260 lb big boy standing on it, and even a pair of 180 lb. little guys sitting on it side-by side, though we don't recommend jumping up and down on it.

http://pix.poisonspyder.com/Vehicles...0-071586-L.jpg

The TrailGate™ is priced at $369.00 Spyder-Direct, or through any of our authorized Poison Spyder dealers. The TrailGate™ ships as bare aluminum, ready for you to paint or powder coat in the color of your choice. Like the Tramp Stamp™ but don't need the TrailGate™? A non-gate Tramp Stamp™ is available by itself.

The TrailGate is currently available for TJ/LJ. It will be available for YJ soon. Note that the photos above do not show the latch covers, which do come in the kit and cover the latch mechanisms on the inside of the gate. I'll update with photos of the latch covers in place as soon as I can.

OK guys we finally had a chance to install one of these on a YJ, and here's what we found. Everything fits on the YJ exactly as it does on the TJ, with one small exception. The top edge of the gate is just a little too tall. We found that we need to shave .320" from the top edge in order to get a perfect fit. We went ahead and did that on our test unit, the results shown in the photos below.

http://pix.poisonspyder.com/Products...4-135003-L.jpg

So we'll be producing a YJ-specific version of the TrailGate that will be laser-cut to the right size. We expect that should take a couple of weeks before we have a production run of them ready (We're not committing to that timeframe though so please don't hold us to it). For any YJ owners that need one sooner, you can simply use the TJ version and slice off that extra material.

Thanks to everyone who has been patiently waiting for news on the YJ compatibility of these :)

I forgot to add that for those running a soft top or no top on their YJ, the TJ TrailGate will fit and work fine as-is. You only need to shave the small strip of material for it to work with the YJ's hard top.

Any chance of one of these coming out for a JKU?

I like.:thumb:

Just a heads-up if you're looking for a deal on a Poison Spyder TrailGate for TJ or YJ (requires trimming to work with YJ hard top), we put four of them in the Garage Sale section today. They have black powder coated gates with scratches/scuffs in the powder coat. Pull the trigger quick if you're interested in one because stuff on our Garage Sale page gets snapped up quick! tailgate

:punk: me want. It would get fid of my weak tailgate latch.

Thanks to Keith Flagler for these shots of his TrailGate. He's running it without Crusher Corners, but he did a really clean job of welding up the holes from the OE tailgate hinges and license plate mount, smoothing them out and painting everything matching color. Nice job Keith!

do you know when these will be available for yj's?

richsipe 12-19-2012 02:08 PM

Here is my build thread putting on the Crusher Corners and TrailGate and an image gallery with my install picts

I went with powder coated black on both and mine were spurred on due to a bit of a tree issue.

This is way cool, loved the tailgate I had on my CJ 7. This is on my Christmas wish list...

Super clean. Would like to see it hold more than 260lbs though. I weigh-in at about 210 and in my opinion 50 more pounds just doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. I know it's not officially rated. Just saying.

You've got a valid concern. We didn't design this thing to be a wrecking ball. Its just a lightweight, clean looking, drop-down alternative to the stock tailgate. In steel it would be way too heavy in our opinion. In aluminum we think its plenty strong, just the cables might be a little light duty if you're going to be rebuilding an engine block on the tailgate. But I suppose you could always do some beefier cables as a DIY measure.

That said, we haven't heard any reports of failures of it due to weight. So we don't really know what the limits of it are. We're just careful to tell folks that its not invincible so they don't have unrealistic expectations.

That all makes sense. I'm not talking about putting anything crazy in the back. But I could definitely see myself and my wife sitting on the tailgate or something. Us combined would come to roughly 330. Or even myself and a buddy. That could easily be over 400 pounds. I still love the gate and have plans for a future install. Might just beef up the cables like you stated. Thanks.
