stock rim with 31" tire on stock carrier

So I just bought my jeep about a month ago an today I noticed my spare tire sits away from the back tail gate an doesn't sit on the rubber stops. So I took off the tire cover an saw that there it a 31" tire mounted on the stock rim but the rim was mounted on the carrier backward, so I took it off and tried mounting it the right way but it wont fit, theres not enough threads to mount it. Any ideas?

The tire needs to rest against the rubber snubbers to keep damage from happening to your tailgate. With the bigger tire, and stock wheel backspacing/width/offset, there will not be enough room to mount it the correct way. That is why the PO put it on backwards.

Do you have aftermarket wheels on the Jeep? Do you plan on running the stock wheel/wheels for awhile?

If you have aftermarket wheels on the Jeep, you could get a matching wheel for the spare. Or, if you plan on running stock wheels, you could remove and cut down the rubber tire bumpers to make more room for the 31" tire. Or, you could get a aftermarket tire carrier or bumper/carrier combo.

Hope that helps.

31/10.50/15 will fit fine on a stock 8" aluminum or steel rim on the factory tire carrier. You may wish to throw a couple thick washers on each stud to space things out a hair, but the tire/rim/lugnuts should still have more than enough threads to grab.

I am running 33x10.5x15's with Crager soft 8's (15x8). Mine come up a bit short of the rubber as well. I am just going to reshape and drill a hockey puck until the bumpers and the tire meet. Just haven't got to it yet. :wavey:

I have 10.3 x 31 and took a hacksaw blade and cut an inch off the rubber stop to take the pressure off the tailgate.

Thanks guys I took the tire carrier off an put a few washers in to bring it out a little bit from the rubber stops. I have american racing rims an a stock spare with 31" tires. I do plan on buying some soft 8's or something aftermarket after winter. Can I buy a aftermarket tire carrier for now? Im only going to be running 31" on my new rims also would the tailgate be okay?
