i bought a d30/35 off of a '98 tj with 4.11s in it. can i just swap the guts into my '03 tj axles (currently housing 3.07s) or do i need to swap the entire assemblies?
also, what is the 'ideal' tire size for 4.11s in a 4.0?

You would have to swap both ring and pinion gears. They are matched.
Manual or auto tranny?

32's is as big as I'd go on 4.11's. Lots of folks on WF are running 33's.

i think im leaning towards 32's.
i should also note this tj will be daily driven about 30 miles a day.

Swap the axles, don't swap the gears between the axles. New gears have a tedious setup process, used gears are even harder to set up since they already have work-hardened areas on the gear faces that would need to be matched up to. You'll spend less time swapping the axles than it would take to swap the gears even if you knew how to set gears up. Not to mention the present gears are happy how they are set up now.

that was my original plan, but the '98 axles i picked up turned out to be in alittle rustier then i wanted and just plain old beat.
i personally wouldnt be doing the work. i have a mechanic that does work on the side. he set up the gears in my last truck.
so, even though you wouldnt recommend just swapping the guts, i can be done.

An axle that is rusty on the exterior is normally fine inside. A wire wheel, a little elbow grease and satin black Krylon or Rustoleum, and I'm betting it will look pretty enough to make you want to install it. Unless you're already well versed in installing R&P gearsets, you really don't want to try swapping those used gears into your axle. A mechanic will often even charge more to installed used gears because they are harder/more time consuming to install.

i agree, ive been tinkering with it and the wire wheel and it is cleaning up. i just want to explore my options.
thank for the advice!!

I just bought the bullet and had everything replaced including an upgrade to 4.56 gears but yet still running a narrower tire at 33x10.5x15. But, with the 4.56 gears and the 15x8 Cragers I could in the future run 33x12.50.
