NorCal Jeep Newb
So, my husband and I just bought our jeep - it is seriously only a week old. We are so excited to have it!

We are looking for an opportunity to get it dirty but we are complete off road noobs and don't really know where to start.

Any suggestions for a first trail?

Welcome and congrats on the new Jeep!

I'd recommend picking up a copy of the Funtreks NorCal 4x4 trails book to give you some ideas.

Awesome. We'll start with that. Thanks!

You're welcome. Oh, and I also recommend paying the extra $5 for spiral bound. It's really nice being able to lay the book down, opened up to the page you're looking at.

Lots of nice looking trails in that book that I'd love to check out, but too far of a drive for me for a day trip. Shaver Lake looks like a nice weekend camping trip with some fun wheeling. Monache Meadows is an easy drive, and nice looking area. I plan to be in NorCal next summer, doing the Rubicon Trail.

Your Rubicon can handle most difficult-rated trails, but please don't go alone except maybe on easy-rated trails, especially as a newbie. Even some easy-rated trails can get you stuck if it's muddy.

Enjoy your new toy. :thumb:

yomondo - thanks for the additional tips. I really appreciate it.

We've been scouring the internet for as much information as we can get and a common theme is just as you said, "don't go alone." I guess we'll have to make some friends here in NorCal -- We're new to Jeeps and California.

We'll be picking up a copy of the book you recommended.

I'll be sure to share some pics of our first trail with you. When you're out this way give us a shout. Tahoe isn't too far away. :)

Thanks again!

Go east to ice house road, lots of trails easy to start and then at the end is loon lake is trail head to rubicon, but lots of easy trails before that

Head north up 101 to the Lost Coast. Usal Rd is a fun, easy trail From Fort Bragg to Shelter Cove. Kings Range to Ferndale is good too. Cow Mt. in Ukiah area as well.
