tire carrier

what is the biggest tire I can carry with a stock wheel. on a 05 tj.. on a stock tire carrier?

thanks

I think a 32x11.5 is the biggest using a stock wheel.

I ran a 33 on the steel 5 spoke wheel for a while with no issues. I think I took the big rubber bumper off but left the others on. I'm sure there will be a lot of opinions on this issue.

i put 33X12.5 and it was ok for about a month but then i saw the tailgate kind of pulling so i took them off..

I was just wondering the same thing. I dont have the money right now to get the rear bumper and tire carrier. So I was gonna use the stock one but modify it alittle to make it work better.... I just bought 33 12.50's and am going to sell the stockers and tires and wanted the matching set.....

save up for the carrier.

you'll need spacers for the 3rd brake light.

I run the Bestop Oversize Tire Carrier (~$250 from Summit) and love it. Opens with the rear gate instead of requiring you to open two things ala most bumpers. It's holding my 33x12.50 spare without issue and I'll routinely stand on top of it on the trail to talk to a group or for visibility. Hell I've dropped off some steep ledges and had the weight of the jeep come to rest on the tire 2x... again no issues.

No way I'd put anything bigger than a 31x10.50 on the rear gate. 32 is really where you're starting to push it with the factory carrier (and only would run that with alloy wheels). The spacer kits are worthless as they just move the tire further off the gate creating increased leverage (and guaranteeing your gate will fall off eventually).

can you see the 3rd brake lights with 33.. I have 32'' and would like a working 3rd brake light

mrbigjeep 10-03-2007 07:13 AM

nope. thats why i said you'll need spacers for it...which may require longer bolts.

bpowa 10-05-2007 09:35 PM

where can I get these spacers?

nicolas-eric 10-05-2007 09:47 PM

will a 35x12.5x15 be too heavy for the stock tire carrier until i´ll have my bestop tire carrier in 3-4 weeks?

sorry, should've said "washers"...thats all you have to use...some washers from a hardware store to make it sit higher...if you have to use too many though you may have to get longer bolts if the stock ones won't reach the thread (depending on how many washers you have to use)

i had a friend use four old sockets to raise up his brake light did need longer bolts though
