HELP! 98 tj 2.5L Stalling

I was driving down the interstate yesterday, going about 65 when my jeep started bogging down. As I downshifted through the gears the rpm just kept going down till I stopped and it quit. After a few minutes it would start up and idle, but as soon as I would start driving it I would get about 50yrds and would sputter down and quit again. Every time I restarted it the rpm gauge would go up to 2,000 then back to normal around 1,000. I drove it today for about a mile and had no problems. I've been told it's the fuel sending unit that's bad. Which I can hear the pump kick on when I start it. So the pump works. leading me to think it's the fuel strainer is clogged so it can't put enough fuel through to keep running. That's my thought.

I'm just looking for suggestions on where to start or if someone else has had this problem.

Thank you,

Mine was doing something similar, (july 2010) '98 2.5, mine was spitting and sputtering, shut off, then I'd restart, go a little bit more and same thing. All with the CEL flashing as it was sputtering. Ended up being the crank position sensor

Bingo! Also, if you replace it get one from the dealer. I can vouch for the Autozone being complete crap:doh:. Funny part I found is its $85 at AZ and $70 at dealership.
