Cat back or axle back?
 
What reason is there for replacing the exhaust all the way back to the cat. Are there real world power gains over just a muffler swap? Proof?

I have a cat back dual exhaust on my 10 Rubi. I think it looks great and sounds good, but there is no power gain at all. I just like having twin tail pipes. The cat back is stainless steel so there is no rusty muffler "can" to deal with. It might not be the most efficient for extreme off roading but I spend the majority of time on-road so there is a bit of a trade off. I get a lot of compliments on it. There really isn't much exhaust going back to the cat. So, you don't have to do that if that's not what you're interested in.

The length of the exhaust AFTER the muffler gives more resonance/tone and eliminates the "Ricey" sound of the jeeps 3.8L v6-

I heard and saw a Corsa axle back dual tail pipes/one muffler on YouTube and thought it sounded really good...deep and throaty! Corsa claims no droning, also.

Anyone using this set-up?

This is the unit I was referring to in the above post. It's listed as a cat-back system, so I guess, generally speaking, anything from the cat back is considered a cat-back.:doh: Sometimes they list axle back systems which I guess can be considered a cat-back as well. Although still somewhat confused, I ordered one of these for it's looks, simplicity of installation and sound. It wouldn't be the first mistake I've made if it doesn't do it for me.
