Food for thought

Quote:

SISKO
You made a... military decision to
protect your ship and crew. But
you're a Starfleet officer, Worf.
We don't put civilians at risk --
or even potentially at risk -- to
save ourselves. Sometimes that
means we lose a battle... and
sometimes we lose our lives. But
if you can't make that choice, you
can't wear that uniform.

WORF
Yes, sir.

SISKO
Now all that being true... the
reality is... no harm was done.
There are no dead children on your
conscience. You got lucky.

WORF
I do not... feel lucky.

SISKO
And that's why despite everything
that's happened... you're going to
make a helluva captain someday.
Now, let's go... they're all
waiting.
(off his look)
Look, this party isn't for you as
much as it is for them. Things
got a little tense there for a
while, and they need a release, a
chance to celebrate.

WORF
But I do not feel like
celebrating.

SISKO
Maybe not. But part of being a
captain is knowing when to smile
and make the troops happy. Even
when it's the last thing in the
world you want to do. Because
they're your troops, and you have
to take care of them.

WORF
Life is a great deal more
complicated in this red uniform.

SISKO
Just wait until you get four pips
on that collar. You'll wish you'd
gone into botany.
Took this out of the script of one of the episodes based on the "Iran Air Flight 655" incident.

Elaberate on how you feel about what sisko is trying to say.

How does it make you feel?
Do you think its right?

I'd like to hear what some of the ex/current Military members feel on this subject, but everyones opinion is welcome.

There was also a "7 Days" episode that touched on the same subject.

Information on the "Iran Air Flight 655" incident.

I am sure that the United States of America is the finest experiment in democracy ever held. I do not agree with the media that we are evil. I know that our standard of living is better than elsewhere, but that is because our forefathers worked their butts off. I do believe that we are spoiled, (I am a parent) we are in a war at this time, and who is being deprived of anything? Google back about bonds, or ration cards. 70 years ago, your parents or grandparents, or even greatgrandparents for our younger members, went through rationing of of things that we take for granted. Rubber(you couldn't buy cool tires, or even crappy ones) Sugar, wheat, beef, Gas, etc. Our grand folks did this to help keep us free. (Not only did they give up nice things, they gave up their LIVES.) America was not made by, or, protected by, a bunch of spoiled brats.
I have had 10+ years in the military, I have been shot at. I am a member of the VFW. Young guys, you got it good. I just wish the leftys would move away, to France, or Canada. It would be over by now. Hillary suks. (but she spits it out). We should have made the Middle East a parking lot in the 80's. They could have rebuilt by now, and we wouldn't be dealing with this sh*t now.

I can consciously say I would give my life for my soldiers, family, and civilians. Nor would I order my troops to do something I wouldn't do. We'll go into battle together or not at all. My personal safety comes after theirs. I feel tham same in my civilian life as well, if I won't do it, I won't make you do it. Just remember my WF buds, I do what I do for you, hopefully it makes a difference somewhere. Did I stay on subject? :)

Are you stirring the political pot again LEV.

You know working out on the power plants with my step dad he and a few of the other fathers who had their sons working under them said pretty much the same thing.

I'll quote

"I know the things I take risks on because I know from experience that I can do them, it scares me to think that my own child is doing it now"

"I would rather my self take the chance and do it my self, then to have them do it"

The things we did out on the plant were pretty scary, It wasn't a big deal for me to walk on a 4 inch wide beam three stories up at the time, but I later found out my step dad was very scared for me even tho I could do it, and he had been doing it him self for years.

The script I copied just kinda stuck out at me, it can really be related to just about anything in life. A Parent, a moderator on a forum, a Military commander, or a plain supervisor. At least thats what I pulled from it?

No, I was just giving background information on what they pulled the script from. This thread is not really about political events, I just want to know what people pull from what is being said in the quote.

Thats what I love about star trek. Every episode is a morality play.

DS9 was very heavy on it.
