Thanks, don from texas

NICE, I had my oil changed by the dealer last week(1500 miles) put 100
on it yesterday and noticed a rattle at start up and while idleing :banghead:

DID NOT do this proir to oil change:popcorn:

I have this noise on my 3.6 and it has 500 miles on it. After listening to both sides of the engine it seems even across the heads. Im willing to bet they are roller lifters and thats the sound we are hearing.:thumb:

Same noise here, and I hope you are right

Yeah I heard what you guys are hearing yesterday, funny this thread came up. If its not roller lifters we are all getting a recall back to the dealer.

mboyda 11-07-2011 11:01 AM

ditto, dealer did first oil change at 500 now hear lifter noise. Have 1,000 now. Thinking changing oil this weekend. Wonder if they put 5w-20 in...

Only had dealer do it because 1st was free. Think time to do it myself again.

oilwell1415 11-07-2011 11:39 AM

We're up to about 4500 miles and I have always thought the Pentastar was pretty loud. My 5.4 also has roller followers and it isn't this loud. I think it's just a byproduct of having so many moving pieces sitting on top of the heads separated from the outside world by nothing but a piece of plastic 1/16" thick.

I Called the service dept, they want to change it again and use bottled oil instead of the Bulk to see if it makes a difference.

I've read where VVT is very sensitive to oil viscosity

You said you are hearing a rattle at start up? The lifter noise is like a very light tick...think of a running sewing machine.

Im going to have the oil changed when it hits 1000 miles from the dealer, we will see what happens.

Lifter rattle/tick whatever you want to call it :)

You guys sure its lifter noise and not the fuel injectors? They make noise too, and fool a lot of people.

ovrthetop 11-07-2011 03:38 PM

I have a brand new one with 60 miles on it that has this same type of noise... odd thing is another one i test drove didnt have the same sound to it. It was very quiet. :(

Could be injectors as well but either way im sure its supposed to make some noise. To much of a coincidence everyone hears the same noise.

Did you test drive a 2011? Thats what I did. 2 Totally different engines.

demarpaint 11-07-2011 04:40 PM

I'd bet its the injectors and considered normal noise. Comparing the 3.8 to the 3.6 would be meaningless, they're two totally different animals. If the noise is really bad have the dealer check it out and report back. I have a feeling about what they'll say.

JKWrangler2012 11-07-2011 04:51 PM

she's a ticker... nothing i'm concerned about though... seems normal, and faint. runs GREAT!

..about the viscosity... my first oil change was last weekend (1k miles) and i asked if lucas oil treatment could be used and to my surprise, the answer is NO! Evidently the Pentastar IS sensitive to the viscosity... and using Lucas would set off dash lights and might even void the warranty..

i have always run Lucas, and recommend it outside of Pentastars... but in lieu of, at the 6k mark, i'll run full synthetic (probably better than Lucas anyway?)

Im not concerned honestly. Listen to a chevrolet LS based motor....they are scary noisy and perfectly normal.:D

Yeah that's a different animal.....that is the cylinder liner and pistons out of clearance until it warms up.

just checking in and I hear the same at start up for a second or two and then it quiets down... It is only on a cold start.
I was talking to the service guy at the dealership and he said it was normal (but then again everything to them is normal).
Mine also sounds loud as if I have some exhaust noise escaping like my old TJ ( which had a cracked header), the problem is I know the Pentastar does not have headers.
I also wondering why the engine is so loud.

I can hear the injectors, this is a different noise, even my son asked what the noise was when we got out to take a leak.

the cold start noise and the idle "ticking" was not present before the oil change, going in for a oil change in the morning so we will see.

ranjr 11-07-2011 06:18 PM

Mine's loud also but not nearly as loud as my Harley. I had the 96ci bumped up to a 107ci with ported and polished head and throttle body. I can hear all kinds of noise sitting on it.

Ours is quiet as a mouse for having 90k miles on it. Where most of them get noisy is when they get bigger than stock cams. The rocker arms are really tiny and have to rotate a long ways to open the valve as much as people are trying to lift them.

Overtrained 11-07-2011 06:57 PM

I think everyone is getting all excited over nothing here. Don't forget the hood isn't insulated either, your going to hear some engine noise.

IIRC the stockers are roller trunnion with a standard tip, so they make some noise as well.

wvjeepman 11-07-2011 07:26 PM

Actually I was over at one of my friends house and his dad happened to be there he came out and was looking at the Jeep. I started it up to leave and he said man your engine is picking you better take it back to the dealer. Well atleast if its a problem there are alot of us so they will have to address it.

C2U5H 11-07-2011 07:34 PM

I haven't read all the responses, but how can a OHC engine have lifter noise? There's no lifters.

It's probably rocker noise most people just call valvetrain noise "lifter noise" wheather it is or not......now try telling me ohc engines don't have rockers...
