HEY So cal guy/gals (Big Bear Trail Recovery Thread)

Hey guys, As most of you know our trails got hammered in the big bear area due to the Butler 2 fire. I have been in contact with the director of OHV and we are setting up a trail clean up day. We want to open up the area asap and we need your help to get it going. I have already recruited several members from other sites. In Mid october i will be contacting the OHV director again so we can finalize dates and the job/trails we will be overhauling.

Please post up if your interested. I will get you all info as it comes to me. Thanks guys

RedRubiTJ 10-09-2007 04:47 PM

I'm interested. I'm not available the weekend of Oct 20th, but am flexible about any other dates.

1BLKJP 10-09-2007 05:27 PM

Rawk, this is an excellent way to keep your trails open. The communities involved in wheeling them should be the ones to help reconstruct and remove debris. Kuddo's to you for helping to put it together. I am going to sticky this message at the top of the forum so that it will not get lost.

tiny terror 10-09-2007 05:38 PM

I'm there, Rawk.

emills 10-09-2007 05:43 PM

Once we get a date I can confirm. But if I am free - I am there.

Eric

Unlimited 10-09-2007 05:48 PM

I'll try to be there. Keep us posted on the date.

Rawkon 10-09-2007 06:53 PM

Thanks for your support guys, and thanks for the sticky too.

As soon as my contact with the OHV fills me in with info i will be posting it right away. you guys ROCK :punk:

MouthfulOfGrass 10-10-2007 12:15 PM

Keep us posted, I'd like to help.

Rawkon 10-15-2007 10:26 PM

OK heres a little update, I have email the OHV manager back. He just got back form vacation and will be setting up dates soon. as soon as i hear back i will post up.

Vector6 10-16-2007 11:05 AM

just a question... wouldn't the fire have "cleaned up" most of the debris?

MouthfulOfGrass 10-16-2007 12:56 PM

I think, regardless of debris, if you have a trail "clean up" then the trail can be opened up again much sooner for 'wheeling.

Rawkon 10-16-2007 03:02 PM

with the rain and 50mph wind gusts we had the trails are gonna be jacked after that fire. fallen trees and land slides galore.

As the others have stated. After a fire any kind of trails are virtually unrecognizable. We are dealing with the same thing here in AZ. A fire went thru a trail and they closed it off. If it wasn't for us being so persistent in re-cutting this trail it would just stay closed.

emills 10-24-2007 09:50 AM

Any news on this? I am assuming that the fires are making plans difficult.

RedRubiTJ 10-24-2007 09:57 AM

Currently ALL San Bernardino National Forest trails are closed. Until the fires are stopped, I am sure we won't know anything.

Rawkon 10-24-2007 10:46 AM

I just received this message this morning

the latest form the OHV manager.

"Let's see how the current fires plays out and prioritize when things cool off"

1BLKJP 10-24-2007 04:09 PM

Yeah, I would imagine there won't be any recreating going on up there for quite some time until all the smoke clears and the smoldering grounds are put out permanently.

However after all of this is all said and done there is going to be an even bigger need for trail repairs and working thru agencies to put things back to normal.

Rawkon 10-24-2007 06:06 PM

Im hoping to get the Big Bear Fire explorers out there with us too. my little brother is a member and is pushing for volunteers in the group.

Rawkon 11-12-2007 01:07 AM

Now that the so cal fires have died ill be sending the OHV manager another email like he asked. as soon as i get s response i will let youall know. thanks for your patience guys.
they just reopend the forest up there except for the burned areas.

Rawkon 11-25-2007 10:57 PM

I finally have heard back from the OHV manager. things are still a GO. He looking at sometime in january. so as it gets closer and i get a date ill let you all know as soon as I do. Thanks guys for your patience.

VVJeepFreaks 12-02-2007 05:53 PM

If I can make it ill be there. It took too long getting some of the trails back after the Willow Fire in 99.

Rawkon 12-06-2007 01:09 AM

yea i dont understand what takes so long, i could have had alot of th stuff done by now with a small group.

emills 12-06-2007 09:44 AM

Still interested in helping. Just let us know the date.

And thanks for taking the time and initiative to set it up.

Rawkon 12-17-2007 03:57 PM

still no update, I hope he sends something soon. i checked out alot of the burned area a couple weekends ago. its not too bad. downside is they had lots of bulldozers back there.

erickpl 12-18-2007 10:04 AM

You could use those bulldozers to your advantage if you are wanting to perhaps 'build up' a few areas on the trails. Perhaps even add some rocks. Those trails can serve as a fire break line if properly maintained.

May be worth asking them about it...

Rawkon 01-14-2008 09:38 PM

Hey guys I just sent another email to Greg (OHV manager). as soon as i hear back ill let you know. as you recall i was told that jan would be our first chance of workin out there. but with the current snow, i wouldnt be suprised if we will be pushed back. ill post up as soon as i find out whats going on. thanks for you patience all.

Rawkon 01-15-2008 05:03 PM

Hi Kevin, we have a meeting scheduled for tomorrow night, January 16th.
This will be held at the Corona Sizzler exit I-15 at Magnolia just south of
the 91 freeway. We will have over 2,500 off roaders represented by
individual club representatives. You and your group are invited to attend
and give us your input. We get together at 6 PM-7PM to eat and enjoy each
others company. The meeting starts at 7 PM. If you can't go, maybe you
can ask another person your associated with to attend.

Thanks a bunch Kevin!

so if anyone wants to head out let me know, I dont know for sure if i can make it but im gonna try.

emills 01-15-2008 05:17 PM

Unfortunatley, I am already busy tomorrow night.

Rawkon 02-01-2008 01:21 AM

FINALLY!!!!!!!
April 19th 2008. put it on your calendar.
I asked about helping on the harder trails up there. and i also asked about further detail on time and place of meeting and gear needed.

Ive been waiting for this. I wasn't able to attend the meeting due to the short notice but im still in contact with the OHV manager.

"We had over 100 people there representing 38 clubs. Good meeting. We have
> an Earth Day Project scheduled for April 19th. This will be to do
> maintenance on the roads in the burn areas."
