What octane to runs best with new 2012 3.6L? 87,89,93?
 
Just curious which gas runs smoothest on the 2012 model 87,89 or 93? I know every engine stock tunning is optimized for a certain fuel.

Still some newbie questions left :).

For the 3.8L it's 87. A premium gas is not recommended as it will show no benefit. I do not believe the 3.6L would either. Also Synthetic oil isn't going to do anything. So save that money up for more mods down the road. :wavey:

Not sure about the 3.6 assuming its still 87 min.

What do you mean by "run best" ?

Higher octane won't increase performance
unless the engine is tuned for it.

Synthetic oil has been shown to free a handful of hp at the rear wheels in many applications. I personally noticed an average of 1+ mpg better fuel economy when I did the switch.

Take a quart of synthetic and a quart of dyno oil and let them sit outside on a day when it's below zero. Then, try pouring both. The conventional oil will pour like honey, the synthetic will be unaffected.

Yes it does have its merit.

Ok I guess I am wrong it will do something but to me it's not worth the extra money. But hey I live in central NY we are only below zero five or six weeks a year.

I run 87 in my '12. With how fast it burns through it, 87 makes the wallet hurt a little less. :D

It would be very, very silly for anyone to run anything other than 87 through a stock pentastar.

Check your manual. I checked mine and it says to use 87, a higher octane overtime can do harm. "08 Sahara"

Ok 87 then:). Just wanted to ask since going near below freezing weather the higher octane sometime idle and runs smoother on some engines. It all depends on how the computer is tuned and optimized.

In the old days a timing gun and turning the disturbutor really adds hp on high octane and today it's all about the computer tune. Thanks for everyone's help.

I was given 87 when i bought the jeep and i thought it ran a little rough. I had a 11 toyota tacoma that i ran 94 the one time i tried 87 it to ran like crap. I switched to 94 and it runs sooooo much better!!! Im broke as hell and should not have a 12 wrangler lol but its my dream car and I sh*t you not it runs better on 94! I will try 87 for 2 weeks and i will check back in but im not crazy!

Add 91 or 93 premium then add a gallon of outlaw octane booster. Your high horsepower indy motor will be tick free and have oodles of giddy up.

Not true. Higher octane makes for slower burn. Too high an octane and you get incomplete burn and in time buildups!!! That's why it's potentially bad in time

87 octane makes more horsepower than 91,93, or any number higher than 87. Not the other way around. Unless you have a high compression engine, your only going to add carbon deposits to your top end parts using anything other than 87. Don't waste your money and crud up your engine.

I never claimed horsepower gains, merely less ping and better giddy up. Open for interpretation. Interesting statement though, I was not aware 87 octane made hp. I assumed higher octane was better when looking to race tune your motor with add ons etc..

Yep, higher octane is only needed in high compression applications. It will make less HP, but it will burn cooler and slower lowering the chances of pre-ignition and engine damage. I used to laugh when guys would show up to the track in stock Mustangs and Camaros who claimed to put VP 110+ in their tanks for ripping horsepower. Little did they know their trap times were slower, not only that but they were adding plenty of carbon deposits to their piston domes and valves.

If someone is looking for good clean fuel for their Jk it should be Techron 87.

I've got an '11 but I've noticed some pinging when the engine is working (going up hill or trail riding). I know ya'll say 87 is all she needs but the pinging goes away with higher octane and she really seems to perform better.

I have used the 92 octane on every fill up. I did it for the "ping factor" as well. I've noticed in other cars if it had lower octane, it would ping.

I have an auto...that may be the case in some instances but I've seen plenty of cars/trucks ping on lower grade gas.
Now I haven't heard mine do this. No tick yet either.
