armor / gas mileage

just posting this up incase anyone is worried about their gas mileage and wants to add some armor to their jeep, i have an app on my Hp touchpad that i put in my odometer/gallons/price of gas each time i fill up and it tracks my mileage and puts in on a graph and a few other things, i have been doing this for a while and just want to share the info incase anyone is holding back on upgrades for fear or mileage :)

anyways my jeep is a 99 TJ with a 4" lift, 33X12.50 tires , 4.10 gearing and the AX15 5 spd manual transmission, ill admit i do drive like a granny and i keep the cruise set to 55 on the highway at all times (the speed limit here) and shift around 1800-2000 rpms (every now and then i do rev it up to 3K+ to keep from building to much carbon up) the mods i added were the Poison spyder steel crusher corners, Poison spyder steel rocker knockers (no tubes) and rugged ridge (i think) full replacment steel tube fenders, also while i was doing these upgrades i mounted a hi-lift jack to my roll bar behind the backseat

last 3 fillups before mods-
17.4mpg
17.7mpg
16.9mpg

last 3 after adding mods-
16.6mpg
16.6mpg
16.4mpg

so in all i lost about 1mpg, which is WAY better than i thought, i thought i would be getting around 13mpg

Good to know since I'm going to be armoring up for next season. Now go and put some 1/4" skids underneath and let me know how that works. Get the heavy steel stuff too! :)

I'm going to try staying with aluminum where possible to make the additions less drastic. I track mine with my Garmin. I did find out that going from 31 PSI to 29 PSI robbed me of about 1-2mpg.

ive got a steel gas tank (currie i think) skid plate i picked up from the side of someones barn for $20 lol, i got all the rust off of it and painted the inside, just need to paint the outside and put it on, going to wait till i get my SYE installed and adjustable control arms tho, my pinion angle is already off and i have vibes, dont want to throw it off anymore lol

Shift higher + aluminum armor = 18mpg on 35's and 4.88s here. Quit lugging it and you'll probably do better.

Rubicondon53 11-22-2011 09:29 PM

Normally, I get 17 to 18 mpg empty, loaded with gear, and off road trailer brings it down to 15 with 33s and .. 4:11s. Last month we took a fall foliage tour in central PA, never cracked 50 mph, and got 21 MPGs..

BeaverJeeper 11-22-2011 10:17 PM

thanks for the info!

I'm pretty sure a brain dead monkey would know your going to get better gas mileage with aluminum armor, that wasnt the point of the thread I was just posting my numbers with steel, but thanks for the useless comment :thumb:

There's a bunch of .gov data on this subject you might be interested in Gas Mileage Tips - Driving More Efficiently

Maybe, but if your reading comprehension was a bit higher maybe you would have gotten what he was trying to tell you.

Shifting above 2000 rpms is not going to help my mileage, with the 4.10 gearing shifting at 2k puts me at about 1500 rpms at the bottom of my next gear which is fine it leaves me enough power for a smooth acceleration to 2k without having to give it more than 1/4 throttle, it doesnt bog the engine down at all and if i need more power i can just down shift

Imped 11-23-2011 03:46 PM

Hook up a scangauge, read the vacuum and load and get back at me. I'm not pulling this out of my ass.

Let me rephrase--I get 18mpg in a TJ on 35's and 4.88 gears.

:surrender: I really didnt start this thread to argue with anyone about gas mileage, the whole point of my original post was how i was surprised how good my mileage was after the armor, if your getting 18mpg keep it up thats awsome seriously! Im going to drive my jeep my way and you drive yours your way, when i take the jeep out its to enjoy the ride, not save gas anyway :thumb: if im trying to save gas i just take the liberty to work, around 25mpg in it most of the time, and if i feel like playing with the redline i take the camaro, which gets about 7-9mpg lol

Granman 11-23-2011 03:58 PM

Lol HP touchpad. Sorry I had to.

I'm tracking my MPG's in my 98 Stock Sport for the first time this tank. I'm at about 2/5 of a tank left and have clocked about 200 miles so far. My biggest concern is when I lift it and get 33's. I do shift at the indication most of the time and when I'm on the highway I cruise at about 70-75 because I like living on the edge.

lol its ok, its a peice of shit, but for $99 i guess i cant complain, it has a FEW nice apps, the mileage one, and i also use a bank account tracking one, other than that its a $99 pong / solitare player :banghead:

just make sure you regear when you lift / get 33"s and it will keep your gas mileage close to stock (as long as you go with the correct gearing)

InvertChaos 11-23-2011 04:11 PM

Keep it civil in here. This is warning number one.

It's been out for quite some time I believe:

[RELEASE][ALPHA2][Discussion] CyanogenMod team Touchpad port - RootzWiki

One of many links.

Ya I work at Best Buy and I did not see one person buy one, then it dropped to 99 bucks and they flew out of the store. We actually decided just to send the rest we had back to HP and get a refund.

I have to do more research into regearing. The TJ I drive now is my dads but I'm looking to get my own that's already been lifted to accommodate 33's so I don't have to go though the hassle. I don't want to go too high because the highway is what I use everyday. I could avoid it I suppose of it means a more mean machine.

No one wanted them because WebOS was dying and not supported by HP or developers. Once they dropped people nabbed em up to throw android on em.

Regearing my jeep was the best mod I have done to date. Night and day difference in driveability.

scgeek12 11-23-2011 05:28 PM

Just got done looking up a bunch of stuff on the cyanogenmod for the touchpad, think im going to wait till they work some of the bugs out it sounds like it has quite a few right now, and i dont want to void my warrenty yet since i have had to send it out twice already but i will put it on when its updated a bit, thanks!

scgeek12 12-14-2011 07:49 AM

just an update, filled up twice since I posted this and I have been shifting around 2500-2800 rpms now to see if it would make it better, first fill up shifting higher i got 14.9mpg, but i noticed my tires were pretty low so i filled them up and continued to shift at 2500-2800 rpms for the next tank and i just filled up today again and i averaged 16.7mpg that last time, so its wasnt much better but it definetly was not worse, think i will continue to shift a little higher :)
