2012 Flange/Transmission Problems
 
Has anyone else out there run into problems involving the splines coming out of some flange located between the differential and the transfer case? (pretty sure that was the location described)

Twice now I have been driving on pavement (thank GOD), pushed the accelerator and received only a clunk for my efforts followed by some rotating clicking noises. After that the Jeep will not go into any gear 4 wheel/2 wheel or otherwise. Fortunately Chrysler has towed it to the shop and given me a rental car both times but I'm just wondering if this has been experienced by anyone else. At this point I have zero confidence on my vehicle because I do not want to pay the recovery fees if I need to be pulled off of a trail somewhere.

I will post more info when the mechanic finally gets around to looking at it again.

Yes call them back and ask exactly where the splines are

if it doenst move at all I would say between the transmission and transfer
case

Evidently Chrysler told them to strip it down and send in detailed digital pics of everything. Fortunately they gave me a nice Charger as a rental in the meantime.

Update...
 
Ok - so the first time this happened it was the splines within the flange.

This time they dug a bit deeper and evidently discovered that the teeth in the transfer case are missing.

How does that happen? I wouldn't think it possible to do that to a Jeep (assuming no manufacturing/assembly) defects.

Anyway, Chrysler is evidently looking into it and I have my rental car until further notice.
I had dreams last night about off-roading in the rental Charger ;) Not sure how well I could mount the winch...

Update...
 
Evidently they have to replace the planetary gear. Hopefully I just ended up with one that had a manufacturing defect and a new one solves the problem.

So they got stripped under normal use?

Yup! At the time I was accelerating through an intersection at about 35 mph.

The issue was with the TC? When you were "accelerating through an intersection" did you have 4WD engaged?

The transfer case should hold up even if he was in 4wd

No, it absolutely was not engaged at the time and hadn't been for at least a day or two prior. I never use 4x4 unless I'm off pavement and since Florida doesn't have rocks for crawling it's mostly just little dirt paths and some mud that I've been into but nothing extreme in the least.

I haven't heard of this happening with anyone else so hopefully it's just an isolated case with my vehicle. Still waiting on the replacement parts though - evidently it's still so new they are having trouble ordering components.

I questioned it because it is so unusual for the TC to blow up like that when it's not engaged. He mentioned 35 mph and I immediately thought of the 4L limit of 25 mph.

No problem. I just had to ask because stranger things have happened. If it were me I would feel more comfortable with a completely new TC.

It sounds like they are replacing most of the parts in the TC but if this doesn't work then I think their next step will be to basically replace the bottom half of my Jeep.

Apparently the parts they received were the wrong parts so they ended up replacing the entire transfer case. So far so good...
