Flat fenders

Will flat fenders make my jeep not legal for the road?

depends on what state you live in and inspection laws

I can think of two issues that could cause you to attract the law. One would be side marker lights, which you can mount if needed. The other would be tire coverage. As was said, it varies by state. I suggest you call your State Highway Patrol and ask, or do some searching on line for laws in your state.

State highway patrol will just spew whatever they "THINK" the law is or what their personal beliefs are regarding what is right or wrong. I speak from personal experience. You can look the laws up for your state online. Do a search for your state's vehicle inspection code.

I don't have flat fenders but I'm in California and they don't bug me where I'm at. I believe the law here is full coverage of tires or mud flaps ( mine are about 4 inches out) not much that's probably why they don't ticket me. A state park ranger told me I had to haw full coverage of tires and mud flaps...I think he was just giving me a little crap. Sorry not much help here

I've had MCE original flattys on my TJ for about 8 months now and I've had plenty of cops beside me, behind me and in front of me, I've never been stopped. I have side marker lights on them, my only concern is VA state inspection, I think I will be fine. I'll find out next month...

Thanks guys! Yeah i live in tennessee, so vehicle inspections arent required. But my concern would be the front blinkers, anyway to mount those on?

Yup go old school. Like my yj but round for your tj. Theres 2.25 or 2.5 inch round blinkers with grommets cut the holes in your grill after careful measuring paint the exposed metal to prevent rust pop those suckers in and use the wires from your stock blinkers to power them. :thumb: And I have the original mce flatties on the yj now and they are great much more room for tires looks reall good very functional and theyre a heck of a lot cheaper then tube fenders :punk:

i have MCE's up front and am flareless in the rear, i got pulled over for my tires sticking out. they stick out 5.25 inches but just got a warning. this was for the rear tires only. he even looked at my MCE's (which shows just as much tire) and commented on how cool they looked (he was a younger cop) but didn't say, or even hint that i need to cover the front tires.

as for the turn signals, stock JK signals are plug-and-play with the TJ signal bulbs. here's mine:

I also went with MCE fenders, but bought the Gen II with 3.5" flare. Same amount of coverage as my stock TJ rear flares. I have never been pulled over...yet. They also make them with wider versions--4.5" and 6" also as well as the tub width originals.
I guess it all depends if you run across a LEO that is a big Richard, and would rather be writing tire coverage tickets than actually working at recovering stolen property, busting drug dealers, or general public safety.
I also used JK front turn signal housings...plug and play!, and 3/4" leds for side markers.

those look really good! i love MCE!

I was informed by an oregon state trooper that my tires stuck out too far. All the tread is supposed to be covered, front and rear. No ticket for that though, just warned me.

Whether or not they will be legal depends entirely on the width of the flatty fenders you choose. Some will be legal anywhere, others will not be legal in many states. Mine are decidedly not legal here in California (and no flares in the rear at all) but after several years of waving to all the local cops to stay on their good side and obeying all laws, no trouble or tickets. Then again I'd hate to be driving it in the rain and have a cop following me getting sprayed by my tires. :D

If they are illegal why would jeep sell them
Without mudflaps?
I live in Illinois no inspection here except
For emission

Jeep? Jeep doesn't sell aftermarket flat fenders like we are talking about. And those that are illegal in some states are not illegal in other states.

im in TN as well, no fender laws here, mine stick out 6+" on each side :) i drove around without front blinkers for a while and never had a problem but i felt like a dick so i put them on (ordered them from MCE) they sell 3/4" LED blinkers so you can mount them almost anywhere

you can see mine on the support bracket for the fenders, i should have mounted them a little further out but o well, they do their job :)
