730N versus 430N in 2012 Rubicon

I just placed an order for a 2012 Rubicon Unlimited with the 430N media center and considering the merits of the 730N versus the 430N. It is about $700+ bones more for the 730N and so far just see the voice activated system and maybe a little better format of the 730N over the Garmin format of the 430. Does anyone have experience comparing the two and recommendations? Also, I also am looking into adding a back up camera and I see a reference to the 730N using a lock pic and I wonder if the 430N has the same capability. Thanks.

I went with the 430N for these reasons:

Easier to use, and the screen seemed (to me, at least) more user-friendly.
I'm used to Garmin and prefer them over NavTeq.
I have no use for the "Breadcrumbs" feature on the 730N.
Couldn't justify the extra $$ for the 730 when the 430 had pretty much everything I wanted.

As for the lock pick question, and if you want MUCH more in-depth info (I'll never be mistaken for an audiophile), check with a guy named xsdbs here on the forum.

He da man, when it comes to media center capabilities and drawbacks, stock OR aftermarket, IMO.

Hey Shireman, bet you didn't expect such instant bombardment, huh?

Sorry man, but here it is:

I have the old style 730N in my SRT8 (navteq) and went with the 430N in the jeep. I went with the 430N because I didn't think the extra features were worth the $$. The 430N does everything my old 730N does and does it much cleaner and faster. The nav and interface is far superior over the navteq IMO.

Man, that was fast kbwwolf and Kelsy73! Thanks guys. Likely keep my order for the 430 and still researching if a rear view camera connects or works any better between the two.

PM xsdbs about the rearview camera. I've told him that I was gonna refer most media questions to him, since he seems to consistently find answers that no one else can.

Can't help myself:

Great threads info on the rear camera installations

Thanks kbwwolf for doing the leg work for me! One of the most compelling reasons I read on one of the threads for getting the 730N is for its adaptability for future upgrades which is important to me if I like a vehicle I am likely to keep it a long time. Thanks again!

You can add a rear camera with Lockpick. I have a 2011 GC with the 430N and it has a rear camera which is great for hooking up a trailer as well as the standard reasons like not running over the kids etc. I ordered the 430N on my JK as well.

Sounds good. I am going to stick with the 430 and order the lock pick v4 I believe.

tomthbomb 11-26-2011 07:46 AM

To be honest if I could go back to square one and order again, knowing what I know now, I would get the 430 instead of the 730. That is with my missing mic excepted (they WILL fix that).

I hate the 430N (lots of experience with it). It is frustrating to use (I really dislike how it zooms in at every turn), the display resolution is less, and the maps show less detail. It also doesn't show weather or traffic, just the 5-day forecast. There is a way to put Garmin waypoints in it however, and I do like the way is shows speed limits.

I bought the 730N for the better maps, live traffic, higher resolution display and the fact that is has dead reckoning, something else lacking on the 430N. The 730N also allows a split screen of the radio and map screens. Overall it is a better nav system in my mind and worth the extra money.

And yes, the Lock Pick can be used with a 730N or 430N to add a camera.

How? Have not stumbled on to that yet.

I like to find every feature of a new tech product I can before I look at the manual.

Maybe that's why you're...stumbling? :D

Sorry. Couldn't resist.

Could be. The 730 is not that intuitive.

Sean are you sure this can't be turned off? I have this radio in our 2011 GC and I don't recall it zooming in at the turns. I will have to watch it more closely it could be I just never noticed it

seanpholman 11-27-2011 12:10 AM

I haven't found a way to defeat it in settings... Maybe I am missing something, but I write about cars for a living and this is one of my big frustrations on the 430N.

As for the split screen on the 730N, the option is in the settings menu.

Thought I had looked at every option, will look again.
