Symptoms of U joint binding?

What are they? And how about any other type of binding in the drive train? What would I be feeling?

They are in the axle shafts near front the wheels. You'd feel them in the steering wheel jerking.

THe others are in the drive shafts and you'd feel them making whole vehicle pop or jerk.

yea thats what i get when i try to let off the gas or if im just trying to crawl along i get alot of that jerking motion. So i wsa right in my suspiscion of it being the u-joint?

Are you in 4 wheel drive?

I have never heard of u-joints binding as they wear out. They get looser, and will actually create "slop" in the joint before they let go. (Just because I haven't heard of it, doesn't mean it can't happen, and in all likelihood, it has and does happen.)

naw. no 4-wheel. Its fine when drive. It only jerks when I give it a little gas then back off. Then it jerks and levels off. It especially happens when going slow tho. If Im cruising around the parking lot in 1st or 2nd looking for a spot and i give it a little gas to go and let off to coast, itll jerk.

I am in no way a mechanical type person, so I'm hoping those types of people will chime in... but here is what I would do...

to check the axle ujoints you can monitor them for a week or so to see if the caps are moving... they shouldn't be. draw a line with a marker pen accros the top of the caps and the axle ears... check back in a day or after a week of driving to see if the line accross the top of the caps still lines up with the line on the axle... if it doesn't then the caps are slipping and its time to upgrade to chromo shafts and superjoints :D

on the driveshafts, grip the drivshaft and turn it to see if the u-joints wiggle.. they shouldn't. the tcase and pinion yoke will have some play in it and that is normal, but watch the ujoints, they shouldn't wiggle around in the driveshaft.

Do yourself a favor. Keep it simple. Check the alignment of the drive line including the tranny. Check all of your bolts and hangers of any sort. Make certain evrything is lined up and tight. Lube all your joints. Check your fluids.
Check every single thing under your jeep BEFORE you start throwing parts at it hoping they will stick. Parts replacement doesn't really solve anything cause you don't learn that way. The parts store get richer is all that happens.
