1971 Hurst Jeepster Commando

Soon to be mine 1971 Hurst Jeepster Commando. Pretty rough shape but lots of potential. Less than 100 of these made.:punk:

I found this beast parked behind an old tire shop in southern Minnesota. A couple phone calls and a visit and bingo. Not mine yet but he is calling me in the morning. We were 1k apart but I blinked a little and now he is throwing in a bunch of CJ parts as well(engine, axles, springs and lots of interior stuff).

The Hurst is still original and running but not driveable(brakes). The hood scoop with the built in tach is very cool.:thumb:

I was planning a tube buggy build but then this showed up. Thinking of putting tons under her and SB Chevy. Hurst came with a TH400 tranny. 4 link rear and 3 link front.

This is what it is supposed to look like.

This is the one I found.

Going to need a cut off and bfh tool to fit 40's in the rear. Or lift it over the tire.

Friend had one back in school...not a hurst ed though. Was a pain getting 36's in the rear.

I was thinking full width 14B would get the 40's wide enough to stuff at full flex. What do you think?

I am not looking for a DD.:D

There doesn't appear to be any room back there. But nothing a hot knife can't fix. Or a sawzall for that matter.

nick50471 11-30-2011 09:03 PM

See how much wider the full width is. I know I'll have to do some trimming but the tires will be outside the tub.

Full width and stuff...sure...into the side windows. Them suckers aint that wide of a body.

Body looks pretty good to me...just a little bit of work and she'd be purdied up. What are you're plans for it?

nick50471 11-30-2011 09:17 PM

Well since there was less than 100 made a smart man would restore it. I however think a V6 in a Jeep was a dumb idea. I would like to set it on ton's and stuff a 350 in it. I have a motor in the barn that would work great with the TH400 tranny that is in it. I like the Blue/Red racing stripe but the Champange White has to go. I was thinking flat black with the stripes, full cage, four four point seats and on 40" PBR's

distortedtj 11-30-2011 09:21 PM

Doable and easy lifting to that old guy...unless you go custom links. Which is not a bad idea.

Ok, but it doesn't stack up to a D60 front or would it like 40's much.

of corse not, but it would be neat for 35s, maybe even 37s.
and just to be able to say you have a ford 8.8 front end. people would be confused.

We'll make it happen somehow. Next year's vaca is pretty well spoken for between disneyland (barf) and Colorado/Utah 2012. (:punk:). We'll put something together though.

Oh, it's doable just custom tubes, shafts and c's. I had a front D35 in two trucks..stock. :D
