check gearing????

simple nooby type question. I have a D44 and im wanting to see what my gearing is. How to I check my gear ratio? I know dumb question lol :banghead:

ou812 12-01-2011 05:14 PM

There should be an aluminum tag on the diff cover bolts that will say 3:73
4:11
3:07
Whatever ur tag says is what the stock set up is,unless someone regeared it before.
But post your year, model, engine and transmission and it will most likely tell us what ratios were avalible

TJspeed 12-01-2011 05:40 PM

i have a 00 4.0 sport 5 speed. it may be stock. but idk... lol

Plowboy1970 12-01-2011 05:53 PM

3.07 or 3.73 What RPM's do you turn in 5th at 60 MPH???

jeepwayoflife 12-01-2011 06:12 PM

yea. Just look at your back differential. (the big round part on the axles, between the back tires) Then its on the left of the Diff. Sometimes hard to see because they get all black, so bring a flashlight. The front and back will be the same gearing. If they weren't, the 4WD wouldn't work. Probably 3.73, but could be 4.10 also.

Lbailey21 12-01-2011 06:57 PM

if its stock its gonna be 3.73 probably. its not gonna be 4.10 or 4.11 bc its not a rubicon

Sorry i shouldve said this before. im not a total noob i mean i know a lot, i mean i know what blinker fluid is and halogen fluid is and exhaust bearings, just never had to deal with gearing before since this is my first jeep lol i know what a diff is. i found the tag on it but cant read it i need to take some brake cleaner to it. the only reason why i got to wondering is one, im look at runnin 33's and two, my uncle just bought an 01 sport with a d44 and it was a DD for some old lady in the city but it had 4.10 gears in it. Mine was owned by some dude in a jeep club in colorado. so im hoping it has 4.10 gears. I found a tag on the right side as well that said "use limit slip diff fluid"

ummm 2k i THINK dont hold me to it...

ou812 12-01-2011 07:47 PM

I have 3:07's,5speed,31's and 5 speed
I run 1850 rpm at 60

Sounds like you have either 3:73 or 4:10/11's

John in Vegas 12-01-2011 08:00 PM

Or you could put the rear axle up on stands and turn the wheel one complete turn counting how many times the driveshaft turns.

Ditto. easiest way to get a rough estimate.

Unless, someone changed the gears and put the tag back on the axle.

John in Vegas 12-03-2011 12:35 AM

Jack the axle, spin tires and count drive shaft! Only way to be sure, or open up the diff and count the teeth on the ring and pinion, but spinning the tires is much easier.

You don't have to actually count the teeth, it'll be stamped on the outside edge of the ring gear. He should open it up and change the lube anyhow, since he just bought it...Right, Trav?

Lift up one rear tire, so that the other one is locked. Rotate the lifted tire, and divide by two before starting your calculations. If you try and do it with both tires in the air, the differential will likely move a little bit and you will get an inaccurate number of rotations. Or if you have an accurate speedometer, you can use this link to figure the rest out. Just leave the boxes empty for what you are looking for. It has most of the calculations in simple equation form to figure the rest out. Test in 4th gear, which is one to one and the easiest calculation.

I put my tag back on, only for if somewhere down the line someone wants to restore my jeep.
