Bestop Sailcloth Install

This morning we installed my new bestop replace-a-top sailcloth on my 1999 wrangler. It was a pain and took about 2 hours including the upper doors, but it looks great! It cut out alot of the sound too!

Looks good! :thumb:

I am in need of one. Where did you get it and how much?

nathan10 12-03-2011 02:43 PM

Looks awesome. Hopefully getting this as well in the near future. Is that a cow in the background? Haha

I replaced mine a few years ago with the RAT also, it's nice being able to see again.

One suggestion I have is to be careful when opening the drivers window, the turn switch handle will scatch it.

Ok thanks for the advice! And no it's a horse in the background haha

How snug does that best top fit? I've seen some aftermarket tops that just look saggy in places and not very form fitting. That one looks pretty darn good though.

I put the same top on my 2000 tj three weeks ago and it was VERY snug - which is why it takes so long for initial install.

Look online. I paid $513 shipped

It's fit PERFECT. It's not saggy at all but that's because it's a really tight fit.

nathan10 12-03-2011 09:31 PM

How hard was the install?

andrewsudderth 12-03-2011 10:10 PM

The upper doors were a pain. We had two people doing it and it was still an extremely tight fit. I watched some videos on YouTube and it helps if you use the back of a spoon or a ballpoint pen to pry the material over the metal frame. The soft top itself was pretty easy. Too us around 2 hours to do it but I'm very happy with the outcome.

How warm was it outside where you were doing the install? Those tops are designed to be installed in temps above I believe it's 72*F...preferably warmer yet. Anything less and it makes it a pain in the ass. lol

Looks good though!

I got mine a few weeks ago from Morris 4x4. I didn't get the new upper doors, I just spray painted the old ones with Rustoleum flat black rattle can. The color match is perfect. I was thinking about getting the window sliders but will let these ride and see how they wear.

Yeah I got mine from Morris 4x4 too. And the temperature outside was 46 degrees but I had it warming up in my house

Did you buy the '97-'02 top or the '03-'06 top? I'm about to buy one for my '00 and wondered which one is better.

andrewsudderth 12-05-2011 10:25 AM

I got the 97-02 top

They are going to be the same thing if you get 97-02/03-06 sail cloth. The only difference is going to be the color/fabric pattern 97-02, 03-06.
