93 starter and steering column

i have a 1993 jeep wrangler. the sector gear behind the ignition lock cylinder has been stripped. i bought a new one but i cant figure out how to dismantle the steering column to replace this part. please help. thank you. :)

i have rebuilt plenty, but have not seen the gear go bad very often. more times than not it is the rack that breaks. is your column tilt or or non tilt? anyway all you have to do is remove the wheel then the locking plate that is held in with a snap ring. there is a depresser made for that purpose but it can be done with out one using an awl or ice pick to unlock the retaining ring. next remove the directional switch, then use a # 20 torx to remove the lock cyl. then i think 3 # 30 torx to remove the lock housing. this is the way to do a tilting column... once the housing is off you will see the gear, simply use a flat screwdriver to pry it off the shaft and slide the new one on. if you have a non tilt it will be different. but again my guess would be the rack has broken

Sorry i should have specified that it is a non-tilt. i do not have the tilt function.

ok disassembly is sorta the same on non tilt, remove the wheel, lock plate and directional switch. then remove the lock housing, i think it is 8 mm bolts. again i presume it is the rack that is broken, nonetheless it is driven by the gear you purchased. the gear does have to be timed in sequence with the gear. just spend a few minutes to get familar with how it all works before you take it apart. it is not hard to do but does require patience and understanding of how it works. it will all make sence to you if you study it before you take it apart.
