Bed armor aerosol
I know quite a few of us love our spray on bedliner :D
I've used the stuff on numerous things and it's great.

Well, I picked up a couple of cans of the Duplicolor Bed Armor aerosol and,'s crappy. No other way to describe it. I get a better spray pattern draining water out of my air compressor than I do with this stuff. I mean it seriously spits and sputters. It also takes hours before I can put on a second coat and takes forever to dry.

Anyone else tried it? I wonder I just got a couple of duds (one can wouldn't even spray :rolleyes:)

Their regular bed coating spray rocks, btw. :punk:

Yep I had the same problem. Its very messy and can really screw with your project.

I have been doing the bedliner mod on my rims for the past couple of days and had the same exact problem.

The issue is that the cans are too cold. When they are cold they spit out big old nasty globs of the liner that is far too thick and takes forever to try, as you described, plus it makes it difficult to get a nice even coating. I thought I had mine warmed up enough, and nearly destroyed my first rim because of it.

What I ended up doing is sitting the cans in a large bowl or cup of circulating hot water for a good 10-15 minutes, longer if you want, before you use it. I just sit a big cup under my tap and turn on the hot water and let it sit.

After you do that, and shake it up really well, the spray comes out extremely fine, and is perfect for the rims. So yeah, warm them up really well and you'll be happy with it. And as far as drying, just make sure you are in a warm-ish place. I was set up in my garage with a heater blowing directly on the wheel, and the layers dried fully in 15ish minutes. Just be sure you aren't putting too much on at one time. From what I've found, if you cover everything, so you can't see the layer just under them, you've put on too much. When they say light coatings, they really do mean light, but it ends up being faster and looking better than coating them entirely in 1 go.

Sorry that's probably more than you wanted, I've just been dealing with exactly this issue over the past couple days. I've only got one more rim to do, been tackling 1 a day, so I should be finished tomorrow!

Here's a pic of the first rim that I almost screwed up. It's not perfect because I had to peel back some of the spray that was too thick and cracking, but after the cans were warmed, it was easy to fix them to a point I was happy with. You can still see the minor imperfections from the issues.

Thanks for the input. Don't worry about any info being "more than I wanted". There is basically nothing out there that I've found. It makes sense that cold cans would cause problems. The Bed Armor is water based. It was in the low 50's today, but the cans had been in the shop overnight and it got in the 30's. No wonder they didn't spray very well :facepalm:

Next time I'll try the hot water trick and see how it does :thumb:

Depending on the application, you might want to try "Plasti-Dip."

I've used it in a few cars as a base coat on the inside body (tearing out all the interior and spraying layers of this before adding Dynamat and putting the carpet back in place), although not a Jeep, it works great for sound dampening, coating rims for 6-8 months, etc. and isn't as "abrasive" in finish as most bed liners are. Home Depot sells it next to the spray paint for around $6/can.

From their website: "An air dry, synthetic rubber coating that is easily applied by spraying, brushing, or dipping. Resist moisture, acids, and provides a comfortable grip. Remains flexible and will not become brittle or crack in extreme temperatures. This product can be applied to anything that paint…"

The only time I can't get it to spray is when the nozzle is clogged from sitting in the garage for a few months. I've applied it in cold weather several times.

A final note from my experience with spray-on materials like this, just from my experience and others': It will peel off of your rims easily, especially when being heated up from braking/car washing/rock chips/etc.

We sprayed a buddy's grill with it and 1 rock chip will force you to re-spray the entire piece of trim because it instantly starts peeling like crazy. Good luck!

scotsman, I've been wanting to try the plasti dip spray. I've used the stuff before, but it was about 30 years ago when it really was a dip you could dip tool handles into :D

Well on the other side of the coin, I did the rear tub and flares on ours with Bed Armor and it's perfect. Course I did it in 90 degree weather. 4 light coats, 15 minutes between coats. And yes I did prep by sanding and degreasing.

Going on 6 months now, and has held up perfect to two very large dogs and the wife's driving skills.
