Couple of issues...any ideas?
 
Just bought a used 2001 Wrangler Sport, 4.0 5 speed. Left turn signal turns off after turn, right signal 95% of the time doesn't. ALSO, serpentine belt looked a little worn so I changed it. LOTS of squealing. Removed belt and cleaned off pullies (really well too, turned crank a couple of times to get all around) and put old belt on...still squeals. Everything spins fine, tensioner seems ok. Ordered the $50 belt from Napa (because the guy said that's what ALL the garages use) and I was able to put it on with out moving the tensioner. Besides these two issues I really love my Jeep!:wavey:

Is your steering wheel straight? Mines off since I replaced my steering box. And that causes mine to not shut off when I turn left. And are you sure the Squealing is coming from the belt? If your positive and replacing the belt didn't help I would check the water pump if it's bad the belt will squeal.

No noises at all when I decided to change the belt. It was starting to crack on the inside, steering wheel is straight. I guess I should have left well enough alone huh? I put the original replacement back on and it's still squealing although not as much. Thanks for the help.

spring loaded. returned the $50 belt. Don't really want to go to the Chrysler dealer since there quite a distance away.

maybe to obvious but perhaps tensioner spring is weak? and when you changed from old belt it was juust enough to show the problem?

The tensioner should have a set of belt go/no-go markings. I would recommend that you check those. There is usually a "l" and a "ll" marking on the stationary part of the tensioner. There is a pointer or mark on the moving part that should fall between the two marks with the belt installed.

Thanks tangofox I will check that. I bought the Chilton book but they're still showing "v" belts with a casual mention of tensioners. Do you happen to know what torx size the tensioner screw is? Not too difficult to pull I believe.

Before you worry about the tensioner, you need to verify that your new belt is the correct size. If it is too large, the tension will come up short.

We have a 2004 TJ 4.0 automatic and we are having this "squeal" problem too. Replaced the serpentine belt, but it still squealed . Replaced the tensioner (It has the automatic, spring loaded type)......... still squealed. I inspected all pulleys and they all turn freely and smoothly with the belt off. This morning I pulled the belt again and cleaned the smooth side with denatured alcohol. Also lightly scuffed the smooth idler pulley and the clutch-fan pulley with fine emery cloth and then cleaned them with the alcohol. For cleaning the grooved pulleys, I used a clean 1" paint brush and the alcohol. Since it evaporates quickly, I installed the belt and started the engine. For now, the squeal is gone and my fingers are crossed. If it squeals again, I'm going to try for the next size smaller belt.
