my engine recently started making a tapping, knocking noise. someone told me it might be the valves tapping. what's causing this and what's the best way to fix it? i know some people who know their stuff about working on engines but if i can fix it myself i'd rather do that. thanks

Sounds like time to swap in a bigger motor to me. It is more likely a rocker arm tapping. This is pretty common in the I6's, but it happens on most pushrod engines when they start to get some miles on them. These can be adjusted to take up the slop that can develop. If you know some guys that know their way around a motor they should be able to git er done. How many miles are on the engine?I am sure some other guys with more 4 banger experience will chime in soon.

mine did that for a while... just wheel it harder! itll go away and then you can get a 350:D

I have the 4cyl. and mine knocks, I was told the timing chain does that alot on these and that they just do that. I would check into it though.

I recently learned that everyones Idea of what a "noise" is differs, and repair manuals don't help in this area. If you don't know what "your noise" is your going to have to bring it to someone who will.
If your like me your not going to be checking the Timing Chain, valves, pushrods...etc...etc.. by yourself......but one thing you Can check is the Exaust Manifold, an exaust leak can/will sound like all these other causes. In my case there was 1 Missing Bolt and 1 Very Loose Bolt on the manifold, a few turns of the wrench and my "noise" was gone.

The squirrels are tired let them out! :) Mine has a slight tap, at 122K I call it normal.

it's at 80,000 miles. not that bad at all for a 95. it's reconstructed because the previous owner rolled. no power train damage to it though. the knocking just started happeneing not to long ago. i dumped in some STP oil treatment to thicken the oil up a little and it quiets it down.
