Build attempt- tjrhd

Hey, I am building a RHD TJ. I have a thread on another forum but have never done one here. I work away from home a lot so there are usually a couple weeks between new jeep installs. Have patience and hopefully before long it will end up being a decent little jeep.

My Wife and I sold our Yamaha Rhino last year so we set out to replace it. We decided to get a jeep so we could ride with several of our friends. I work away from home so it is something we can do together as a family for the most part. We shopped around and found several jeeps around 10 k. I was wanting a TJ because of the suspension (never did i know what kind of TJ h**l I would find. I found the RHD tj in the back lot of a Chrysler dealership in Fort Smith, Ark. It had been sitting there for a while because, obviously there isnt a big market for rhd unless you carry mail. Since we were buying a trail vehicle the only thing different about all of the TJs I had found in my price range was this RHD...It was def. unique! So we brought it home!! Everyon loved it even the kids. (the photos are sloppy at first because of the blackberry pics).

We then proceeded to get a lift kit, tires and wheels. I didn't know anything about jeeps and my friends all have YJ's and Cj's so the learning process is quite costly. Thank Goodness for jeep forums. They have been a huge help the past several months. I used a shop in Fort Smith, Ark. At the time I just wanted the cheapest lift I could find and they gave it to me..4 inch Suspension installed for 900 bucks.. The lift looked alright but isnt made for very hard wheeling. Here are pics of the jeep after the lift.

Wow did it ever ride rough. We have been going on trail rides in the mean time and have enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. It is very funny to see the expressions and hear the comments about the RHD. It is especially funny when people have had a bit to drink and really cant figure it out.... Here are a few pics of the mountain run we had in our area. Any vehicle can make the run but there is a bit more extreme rock climbing and mud driving places off-trail if one wants to

After the first mountain run in May I decided it was time to upgrade the rig a little more. I wanted lockers. Once again I was trying to stay cheap. I shopped around and read reviews, I decided on the spartan lockers. I had a different shop I had started using order me an open carrier for my dana 44 in the rear. The front Spartan went fine and works great to this day. The rear was a different story. Just remember that I knew very little about any of this (I do not claim to know much now just more than before). The carrier I recieved did not seem quite right. I had to drill out the ring gear bolt holes so the ring gear bolts would go through. I didnt think much about it at the time. I installed the locker and had trouble continuously. The locker would not grab good at all. It slipped continuously. I took it to the new shop I am dealing with and he shimmed the locker, even though the spartan is designed to not need shimming. I re-installed and same problem. I then gave up and had that guy install a detroit for me because I was wanting to eliminate anything I was doing wrong in the process. I cant help but wonder if that was a slightly different carrier since I had to re-drill the ring gear bolt holes...Oh well I got a detroit now and am trading the non-working carrier with spartan to a guy for fixing my rear main oil leak.

http://i1198.photobucket.com/albums/...hd/locker1.jpg

the locker digs great now. It will work till we can re-gear and re-axle everything..

The second Mountain run for some idiotic reason I decided to try the mud hole. Mud is evil!!!
Thats when I broke several parts and started me on the quest that lead to JF and newer, higher quality parts.

This is the famous mud hole at the end of one of the mountain trails. It is a BIG mistake, trust me. I spent hours and hours cleaning the mud out of the jeep inside and out. The jeep also got hot all the way out from there because of the mud stopping up the radiator vents. The mud also claims a lot of people's starters. I would not do it again unless I had a buggy on tires big enough to keep the tub and all of the important things out of that stuff. I broke my front DS ujoint and also bent my UCA's which in turn pushed my coil springs into my shocks damaging them.

MUD is bad.

One good thing did come from this, I am now able to replace a lot of the crappy components with good ones.
Wow those big rigs with 40 plus inch tires sure made a big hole! This is the submarine pic

I started hitting the forums and I learned about better parts and how to install them!
I am getting ready to do a tummy tuck. I will either go the SAVVY route or UCF route. What I plan to do until I can afford one of the higher end skid kits is fab a crossmember and a flat to frame skid myself.
Here is a list of all the upgrades I have ordered.
Novak cable shifter.
BTF DIY tube fenders
Mr. Blaine Sway bar relocation brackets
Currie HD steering from Gerald at SAVVY
Rear Aluminum UCA from Gerald at SAVVY
Antirock for the front from Gerald
Upper CA JJ conversion Kit from Gerald
Front Lower Aluminum CA's from Gerald
4 inch extended Brake lines from Gerald
1.25 BL from Gerald (getting ready for tummy tuck)
1" MML from Brown Dog
Stock RHD pitman arm (the shop that put my dpa on lost my original)
I have RE front upper CA's a shop had ordered for me before I discovered JF (can you say frankenlift)
Tatton CV rear DS
Teraflex extreme short shaft SYE kit from tattons (i wanted a JB conversions super short sye but I got the combo from CJ tatton and he could not get the jb)

I have a lot of parts to install!

I still have to install the MML, BL, btf fenders and the list goes on and on.
I have the steering installed but I have to fine tune it for my RHD. In order to go back to a stock PA the drag link needs a slight bend in it to keep it neutral..This is going to take some patience..Something I do not have much of.

Keep in mind there have been 3 or 4 months passed now since all of these things have come about.

Looks like a good build man. And a fun place to wheel. I agree mud is evil lol

tjrhd 12-28-2011 05:52 PM

I finally got rid of a serious DW experience by replacing my RC lower control arms and I also replaced my upper CA axle bushings. I used the Currie JJ replacement kit as seen in the above pice.. NO MORE DW!!

Here are some pics of some wheeling I was able to do on a few short breaks from working. Everyone has been so busy that I had to go alone.

More to come! I am working as usual but I plan on installing the BTF fenders and doing something about the flat skid on my next days off.

GoldenSahara00 12-28-2011 06:20 PM

The btf r pretty good DIY fenders from what I have seen. I would have been running them long ago is it wasn't for tire coverage laws in pa.

tjrhd 12-28-2011 06:28 PM

They aren't too strict on that here.

Haha that's good news for me. I'm prob gona end up fabing some and just adding in 6 inches of flare.

tjrhd 12-29-2011 07:01 AM

It would not be that hard to do. I have seen a few people make flares and make them look like rokmen or tnt fenders.

tjrhd 01-17-2012 09:09 PM

Here is the latest. I have installed 35-1250 15 goodyear mtr/kevlar
I installed brown dog MML, Savvy 1.25 bl, novak tranfer case shifter. I have a Savvy GTS waiting to be installed.
Here are the pics of latest parts and a recent wheeling trip.

Thanks, I was wanting a 4.0 with auto trans so it all worked out.

I went home yesterday and changed the rear diff fluid and put the new UCF cover on. I also aired my tires up for highway use. I have to drive my jeep to work this week because my truck is going into the body shop. When I did my SYE kit my fill plug on my transfer case was rounded off. I welded a torx bit in there.
