Help with a 6'' rough country lift
 
I have an 03 TJ and just bought a 6" lift kit for it. I've been trying to decide wether a transfer case drop kit can be used for this or if i have to go all out and buy a new drive shaft and a SYE. Can anyone plz help me out??

deff want a sye and new shaft..tc drop wont cut it for that big of a lift..did the come with all the control arms? gonna run 35s?

You need a sye/cv and adjustable upper control arms if your kit didn't come with them.

Rough Country 662X Jeep TJ 6" X-Series Suspension (97-06)



This is the kit i bought. It appears to me that I have all of the control arms. I am gonna eventually run 35s but now it looks like ill have to spend that money on a SYE and CV lol. How much do those usually run? you guys have a place that has good deals on them?

Hey thanks for the link! And will this be all i need or will i need more than this to complete the lift?

Since you have the adjustable control arms, you should be good. But, go here to see more and learn more about the way to set the rear pinion up for the SYE/CV driveshaft, go to tech info at the top right of the page.

Yea you will need an SYE and shaft. Shaft from someone like tom woods and advance adapters for the SYE.

With that much lift I hope you are running 37's are bigger. That much kills your center of gravity. I run 3" suspension + 1.25" BL for 35's. Then again running anthing over a 35 will call for a major overhaul of the axles.

I think I've figured it out. I'll need the SYE kit from that link for the back driveshaft, AND a Tom Woods XB configuration CV driveshaft for the front. Am i missing anything?

You've got a good bit of lift, but I'm not sure you need to replace the front drive shaft. It already has a double cardan joint and uses a fixed yoke, so as long as it is still the proper length you should be good to go. That link from 4x4groupbuy above should get you the proper SYE and shaft (after you measure). Other than that, you'll just need to make sure you're adjustable control arms are good to go and that your rear trac bar doesn't bind after setting the pinion angle correctly.

I've wheeled with a few people riding on 6" SA lifts. Actually one guy had this same lift with 35s. I cant imagine that the ride quality will be good at all. He did fine off road but he had a sye/cv set up plus a 1" TC drop?

To the OP if you have not pulled the trigger on your lift kit you may want to reconsider. 4" is the most lift recommended for short arms. With 6" of lift it will look silly with 33s also and to step up to 35s you are talking about spending a lot of money in supporting mods to handle tires that big.

The 6" lift will be perfect for looking good while parked.

The fact that you had to ask about SYE/CV tells us that you know very little about what you are about to do. 6" lift on a TJ that is actually driven is not a good idea on road and a horrible one off road.

If you decide to stick with the 6" lift you will also need to regear both axles depending on what tire size you are running. If you go with 35's you will need to upgrade the steering. Depending on what axles you have you will need to upgrade them as well. Brakes are another must have when running big tires.

As you will find out there is much more to it than just buying a lift. You will also find that the RC kit is rock bottom of quality. I installed a 4" RC lift in my TJ. I will never do that again nor will I ever suggest it to anyone else.

All of you guys have been very helpful I cancelled my order for the 6" RC lift and I'm going to get a 4" from another company. Any suggestions? And will I still have to order the SYE and CV driveshaft?

At the risk of starting a pissing match, I'll suggest Savvy's 4" kit. If you're looking to buy a bolt on kit, it's about as complete as you can get. Their stuff is nothing but top quality, and they have great support.

Edit: You're going to want an SYE/CV with pretty much any lift, especially anything at 4".

Yes. Do set it up properly, you need an SYE and a CV driveshaft. You still also need upper adjustable control arms at a minimum. I'd suggest buy all 8.

Good choice canceling the RC lift. They are bottom of the barrel, and unfortunately they provide incomplete kits with very low end components. You get what you pay for.

Yes sir, all 8 are adjustable and you can choose to get either steel or aluminum arms.

Alright so i wont be doing any serious offroading or anything too strenuous so would it be acceptable to just go with 4 control arms and say a mediocre/average brand? any other suggestions?

So long as they have currie jj at the other end. So that leaves you with currie, savvy, or rokmen.

Why bother getting a 4" lift if you want really be wheeling it?

Not that I won't be wheeling it I just won't be doing hardcore rock climbing. I'll be wheeling but it's more of an everyday driver

It's all about what you want to get out of your Jeep; I enjoy rock crawling, but I certainly wouldn't call what I do extreme or hardcore (yet). I just got out of college, so my build is relatively young. That said, wheeling we do is certainly something you need good components for; last time we were out a fellow club member bent their tie rod before we even got 100 yards onto the first trail of the day. That's nothing uncommon, and is the reason I buy the parts I do. But in reality, I wouldn't settle for inferior parts even if I was only doing dirt roads. I went the budget route once and ended up replacing most of what I put on after only a year of use. I upgraded to Savvy/Currie stuff and haven't had a single problem since.

If you want parts that will get you there and back without issue, I'd look at the more quality stuff; anything with JJs at each end is what I'd recommend. If you're OK with gambling a bit, then look at the budget stuff.

I will probably have to bite my lip and go with the savvy then. Who knows this summer after I have summer break from college I may go muddin a lot more. And I do agree about it being a pain replacing parts due to low quality so in the long run this will probably be cheaper.
