Over tightened brakes

I've already looked for similar problems here but can't find anything.

Today was my first try at changing my brakes, '98 TJ,
everything was going smoothly until it came time to make the final adjustments.
I don't know how but I've managed to over tighten the adjuster and now I can't loosen the shoes.
I've noticed that the adjuster only seems to to tighten and not loosen up.
Now the wheel is difficult to turn, I've tried taking the drum off again to loosen, but the drum seems to be pressed against the shoes.

I can't think of anything to do, is there a special way I can loosen the adjuster without removing the drum?

I believe the adjuster has an arm that keeps it from loosing. You will have to take something (pick or small screwdriver) to "free" the adjuster to loosen it. It will look similar to the one below.

This picture is for a dana 44.

There is a little arm that you have to lift off the star inside the drum. Once you lift it off of the star you can back it off. Shine a flashlight inside the drum and you will see what it is.

x2. You will feel it after a few pokes. Its like doing surgery through a small hole.

Sounds like words of experience. Reminds me of the game Operation.
