Fuel pump howling? - 6-8 cranks to start
91 YJ, 4.0 - Automatic ( crazy right )

so i just got to VA and bought my new girl, Sarah ( its a sahara) and i'd like it to start a little faster, maybe 1-3 cranks ( like my 87 did)

anyway- starting the jeep, i hear the Fuel Pump engage, and it doesn't sound bad, or mechanically "droopy" but when its warming up - about 5 min after starting ( driving or idling) i can hear a Howl, or low tone whistle coming from the fuel tank, i hope its not my fuel pump!...

what do you guys think? - I'm going to replace the fuel filter tomorrow and post to let you guys know but, is this whistling telling my my pump is going bad, or is it whining telling me it can't push through a clogged filter?

also - any more tips to make her start faster? -

thanks guys - keep jeeping!

mine is doing the same thing on my 93 just started today, i have had this thing a couple months and it seems something breaks every time i drive it, this howling on mine is driving me crazy, and ive only heard it for 20 minutes, just curious what was the fix? fuel pump?

no fix yet, mine still howls, but only when its close to an empty tank. BTWL my fuel gauge is just stops at a quarter tank and wont go lower.... so im leaving that until i change the fuel pump...hopefully not soon

take it easy

Yur 87 was probably a carb, and the 91 ahould be a H.O. fuel injected.
Try this.......turn the key on but don't start it, let it prime. Turn it off, and do it again 2-3 times. Then try to start it. If it starts right up, you are losing fuel pressure in the rail from the tank. It is bleeding back into the tank after sitting. My 95 did it, but was much more of a problem when it was cold.
As far as the sound, a fuel filter may fix it, but it sounds like either your pump in going bad or the strainer is stopped-up. If you pull the tank, I would just replace the pump anyway. If I ever buy a fuel pump, I always buy from the dealer but that is just me. I learned the hard way on some of my Chevys in the past that chain stores don't always have what your vehicle needs, and a fule pump is nothing to skimp on. Best of luck fella
