I'm looking at a1997 grand cherokee 4.0 auto that I can get for $500. It runs and drives but was rolled. (salvage title) I want to install atleast the motor but would prefer motor trans and transfer, Into my 1997 TJ 2.5 5 speed. Both have about 180K. Has anyone done this? I know anything IS possible but I dont have a real big budget on this project. I can get the whole GC so most of the components will be there. Will I need new drive shafts? Are the shifters basically the same (floor)? Between wranglers and GC? Any other problems I'm not seeing? I love my TJ and it is really clean for a 97 in Ohio but I'm not a fan of the 2.5. Thanks for any help. Or point me in the direction of a thread I missed, I did look but didnt find much.

I can't be the only one to want to try this. I know it would be easier to swap from TJ to TJ But that isn't my current option. Somebody has tried this.

Just make sure that the transfercase is a 231 and not an awd or what ever the other options were with the grand cherokee.

I'm checking on that tomorrow, Gonna run the vin to get all the info. I know I will need- 4.0 motor mounts from a TJ frame, Not sure about the driveshafts or the spline count? Not sure about the fan shroud, If the one from the GC will work or not. Not sure if I will have problems with the ECM or not. Not sure if the floor shifters will be the same or not. There is a junk yard with a few wranglers close for small stuff but IF I do this it needs to be budget minded. No point in doing it if its gonna cost me 2k.

Do you have a/c?
Mounts on the frame will need to be cut and re welded, things that are different between the 2.5 and 4.0; power steering hard line, heater/rad hoses, a/c lines (if applicable)... Seems like it should be simple because they are similar engines, but because the 4.0 is longer it pretty much changes the mounting of everything. All the main wires to/from alternator are going to be to short and who knows what else.

No AC on my TJ but not sure on the GC. I will have all the harness from the 4.0 GC

You also have to take into account that the grand cherokee is a 4 speed auto... and from what i understand there is a difference between the 5 speed transmission in 4 cylinder and 6 cylinder jeeps..

Alright going a different direction with all this now. Leaving 4 cyl in it and gonna sell it when the weather breaks. Thanks for you info! All answers can be found here.
