Makes ya wonder if some soldier picked that up from DRMO (or it's equivalent) way back in the day.

Up Hill Bill 01-04-2012 05:47 PM

That's a nice CJ (CJ3A, 1948-53 - I think) , fitted out to look military!

But, it's NOT a WWII Military MB or GPW "jeep"

Wondering same. Seems logical. I mean, that's the real deal...you know?

Damn. I dunno enough about old Jeeps, but uphill bill is indicating that's probably not the case.

Oh well. Maybe Elvis bought it when he was stationed there and had it done up like an Army Jeep.

Up Hill Bill 01-04-2012 06:16 PM

Clues:

1. 7 slot grill = Willys, military MBs and GPWs had 9 slot grill.
2. Windshield is one piece, not split as in MB, GPW, CJ2
3. Gas filler on left side. MB/GPW was under driver seat
4. No 'notches' for axe and shovel on left side.
5. Vent in front windshield below glass.
6. I'm not sure it if it has a tailgate or not. Kinda looks like it does. If so, the tub is even later, CJ3B (1953-64) (I think)
7. No tie-down 'handles' on the tub.
8. Windshield wipers mounted below windshield. Manual wipers were above windshield on MB/GPW

I'm sure there is more, but that's enough.....

So you're saying it was Elvis's POV??

Definitely!

Someone had a lot of money and/or time to put that together. Could only have been Elvis! :thumb:

Unless I'm mistaken, the CJ3B has a taller engine compartment (the hood sits higher in relation to the fenders) than the 3A. I'm not sure, but the one in the pic doesn't look tall enough to be a 3B hood/engine compartment??? I'm subject to correction, of course.

You're right. No space between front fender and hood = CJ3A, or could actually be from an MB/GPW. The builder has clipped together a lot of parts, so tub may still be from a 3B. But, it's not real clear if there is a tailgate - just that vertical seem that doesn't look right for an MB/GPW

Up Hill Bill 01-04-2012 07:24 PM

OK. Did some more research... That's an M38 military jeep. Used by US military after WWII and into Korea. So it's not a poseur!

Only about 60,000 were made before the M38A1 came out, so it's a rare bird, and in superb condition.....

Learned something....

Around time of Battle of the Bulge, my Dad modded his with a pneumatic unit he picked up in the motor pool. Talk about useful mods!
