I have a questions for those that know about motors, I have a '92 YJ Islander that I just bought. It has 161,000 miles w/ 6 cyl. 4.0. It has 31" tires. The jeep's engine is showing it's age. Times are tough so I'd like to give this Jeep new life, but what is the best way to do this on a tight budget, Remanufactured motor, rebuild the one I got, or getting new engine all together. I don't know a thing about this, but I don't want to get ripped off due to my ignorance. Can anybody tell me what they might do in my predicament.

Rebuilding my 4.0 right now. machine work, just under $600, rebuild kit, $430. And have spent abt 300 on replacing other items, clutch kit, water pump, etc. those aren't necessary to replace.

A buddy of mine said the best thing I could do for my Jeep is swap a 350 Chevy V8. I don't have much money for that swap, though. It requires the purchase and install of a computer as well.

Call around and see about rebuilding the engine you have, if you can do it your self, do it! Swapping a engine is not cheap. If you don't have access to space and the proper tools you are looking at a huge head ache. Motor mounts and tranny adapters alone will run you almost $600.

I have the 4.2L and am throwing a 4.0 head on it and want to get performance headers and FI kit. That will make a monster low end torque motor that will weigh less then a V8 and have around the same power as a stocker!

I would stick with the same type of motor I have. The 4.0L I-6's are good motors. If you are not able to swap one out yourself, go with a good reputable shop to install a fresh rebuilt motor. Going that route keeps you from having to worry about adapting anything, & if you look around, you can find a fresh really well built 4.0L motor to swap in.

That would be the best & most painless route to go, IMO.
