Locker Shootout!!
 
I am planning to install lockers within the year and would love to get your feedback on the subject. Give as much information as you possess, comparing one product to another, the lockers you run, the pros and cons, and your experiences with either. This thread is not limited to any specific axle and stories are encouraged.

I'm talking full case lockers, air lockers, OX lockers, e-lockers, and drop-in/lunch box lockers, etc. Most of the driving I do is on the road and I will soon be finishing my Ford 8.8 swap with a D30 in front, with plans to wheel after building my rig right. I would really like to see this get interesting and hopefully we get a lot of lead flying :popcorn: Who wants to take the first shot?

I run Eaton elockers and havent had any problems with them. I just flip a switch and there on. I don't do the mud bogs just mainly trails, hills, etc.

I have an ARB in the rear and love it. I would love to have one in the front, but I can't afford it right now. So, I am going with a Aussie or Spartan up front with Superior shafts. I have already re-geared the Jeep last year so a lunchbox locker up front makes sense for me.

I have an eaton e locker in my 8.8 and love it. I was thinking about putting a lunchbox in the front, but I love the e locker so much I'll probably just save up and put one in front.

I just put the spartan in my 30. Stock ring gear forces you to remove the carrier. I didn't notice any thread locker on the ring gear bolts. So far the spartan works like it should. Even without in 4wd the front traction feels like more grip. I actually like that. I do here the clicks in the corners. No problem with me. It lets me know it's working. Labor wise. Installing an arb or other would not have been that much more work. So, if you have a stock Dana 30, don't think installing a lunchbox is going to be quick unless your pin clears the ring for removal. I'm going with the arb in the rear.

Although cheap, the powertrax lockers in the front and rear of the wrangler work great.30minite installs and no fabrication or drilling required. Work great for the occasional weekend warrior. If your hardcore, find an ox or arb

I have ARB lockers front and rear. Only lockers I've ever owned, and I'm very happy with their performance. :cool:

Auto lockers, especially in the rear, require a bit of skill to master. They will engage and disengage with trottle response. You coast, they disengage, you throttle up they engage. I have a Detroit full in my Dana 60 in the rear of my '86 Bronco. It let's you know it's back there under the above mentioned conditions. I have a Dana 44 Detriot EZ (Lunch box locker) in the front. I have hubs up front so it is a non factor on the hardtop. The Detriot is a solid unit, zero problems.

The rig is not easy to drive if you have no experience with auto lockers. It can shift you around petty good until you get used to it. I would not let my wife or kids drive it around town. It would cause them too much grief. Would I swap them out, no. Install and forget something as stout as this was my intent.

I have ARBs to install in my '07 JKU. They will require more detail in the installation. And the diff will need to be serviced regularly. ARBs are sensitive to dirty gear oil. That and the separate air source is something to consider. Air lines and o-rings are something that also require additional attention. I would not put an auto locker in this rig. The missus and the kids whell it as much as I do. Plus, no hubs on the front makes it a certainy that you will haev steering issues from time to time.

And then finally, the Rubicon. We bought one for the missus. It's hers to do with as she pleases. That one would take the least of work for me. I can live with that.

E-lockers are what they are. Electrical soleniods, and wiring to get mounted up.
Ox Locker is a cable and custom shifter and diff cover. So, there is a little planning in that one as well.

I vote for what you can install and run with. Turning a wrench is the 2nd best way to learn about your rig. The trail is the 1st best.

I run Eaton E Lockers front and rear and have not had a single issue and I abuse them regularly. I do carry an extra solenoid just in case. I run a 30 spline in my Dana 30 with alloy axles, the locker costs the same as the 27 spline. Don't confuse the Eaton with the Auburn! The Auburn uses clutches for "lock up" that tend slip after very little use.

I with NWBronco. I have a Lock Right up front, and it does shift you around a bit whenever you are on/off throttle. This is most apparent when you're on snow/ice, and can be a bit scary until you get used to it, but once you do it becomes a great advantage in those kind of conditions.

I went with the Lock Right because of the reputation. In hindsight I would have gone Spartan because of the larger center pin, but they had just come out and no one knew too much of them at the time. The Lock Right has lived up to the reputation so far after 3+ years.

I went with the lunchbox because I have decided to keep my CAD. This way on the street in 2WD it's a non issue.

i wouldn't say eat up.. this only aplies to rear auto lockers. u know how the tire on the wheel you send power to will wear a bit more then the tires not having power sent to them.. well now both rear wheels will have power sent to them so both rear tires will wear a bit more then just one.. Hopefully that makes sense..

Eton E lockers in both ends, they are awesome. No air lines, compressor, no exspensive cables. I love them and would put any other rig I build.

OX locker here, love it. and if you do manage to break the cable a simple alen key will un-lock it or lock it

Yukon Spartan lunchbox in the front D30. No issues with it at all. I cannot hear it on the turns, but it works great. Comes with a real simple to install spring system, a new hardened steel cross pin and new roll pin. Does not reuse thrust washers so one less part to wear out. I'm running 4:88 gears so I had to remove my ring gear to install. Took me around 1.5 hours and part of that time was spent greasing the jeep while the RTV dried. No complaints and I would run it again.

Paid a pro!!!! Spent too much money on everything to have it blow up because I was too cheap to pay someone. A lunch box locker I would install, but nothing else. And I have built motors and transitions and all of my keep by myself, so I consider myself pretty capable.

I had my Eaton E Lockers installed by a reputable shop, set up and wire routing is everything. I have 37,000 mostly hard trail miles on both and have never had a problem with them.

I have an ARB rear and a lock rite front. I will be adding an ARB when I get the money. Selectable is the way to go. Sometimes I don't need to be locked in, and when trying to turn and go up a hill, you will be able to turn a lot better not locked, traction willing of course.

The arb switches fit really good in the existing switch panel in the 2001 model wrangler. Only a slight modification was required to the openings.

I just don't want to install onboard air. So I'm thinking that Eaton is the way I want to go. How much for a pair?

The only time you should have "steering issues" with an auto locker in the front thats working correctly is when in 4 wheel drive. Im only in 4x4 when Im on the trail and when Im on the trail I want the locker engaged. Its never been an issue for me.

The single arb compressor is really small. I don't plan on inflating tires with it. Easy to mount under the hood. Airline is also very small to the diff. Soon as I find a diff spreader I'll be installing this arb in the rear.

Yes, I only have issues when in 4wd. My TJ has the turning radius of a 4 door JK when I am in 4wd because of this. If I had an ARB up front, things would be so much easier. On the right trails, it feels like I have a bulldozer blade instead of front wheels.

What is your fear of onboard air? You won't notice the pump, and if an airline gets snagged on something and gets a leak, you can repair it on the trail with a knife and a barb. Not knocking the Eatons, but ARB makes a durable product.

I run ARB up front in my 30 spine molly shaft D30, and a detroit in the rear, dont get a detroit for your application. I am currently building another axle and either the e-locker or ARB will be in the rear...My ARB compressor is capable of running both front and rear, but that compressor is like 350 bucks. The elocker is probably a good all around locker for your needs-and yes, less expensive.
ARB pros: Good product, reliable, excellent on/offroad perfromance...
Cons: Air compressor cost, actual air line to diff, must keep gear oil clean or ARB messes up.

As of now, you probably already know that a Ford 8.8 has posi traction.... would it be okay to run the rig that way with a powertrax in the front and leave it like that until e-lockers?
