Jeep Add A Trunk?

Are these worth buying? If they are, where is the best place to get one? Thanks, Scooby

they are if you have a soft top and want to lock stuff in your trunk
keep in mind that
1. if the seat is down or out it becomes useless
2. if you need to put something in the trunk that needs to stand up or be higher than the rear fender wells it will take like half an hour to take it off/ put it back on afterwards
3.it makes it harder to put stuff in and out of ur trunk

but otoh if you dont have a hard top w/ full doors or a tuffy console you will not be able to leave ANYTHING of value in your jeep

its 180 and free shipping at northridge 4x4 but idk what it is elsewhere

Find one used if you want one. they pop up decently often, and can be had cheap. I think I paid 50 bucks for mine, L.N.I.B, with shipping.

As stated, with a hard top on, just take it out. Its really only for the soft top, and to be honest, really only for when you have the top off, or something of somewhat decent value to lock up. Its ony about 1 foot deep, and maybe a foot and a half wide. Its deffinatly nice for summer, decently secure, but just like the console, you can always just rip the top open.

Im happy with mine in summer, comes out in winter, but I don't know that I would pay 200 bucks for one :) If you don't keep anything in your Jeep, save your cash. If you just want to keep something "Out of sight, out of mind," find one used.

EDIT: As stated above, it really doesn't work too well if the rear seat is removed, or folded up. It is bolted down, but without the seat there its not too much of a deterent. To be honest, I never even got the bolts for mine, keep forgetting. I just use it to keep my air compressor and jumper cables out of sight with the top down.

The factory Jeep one's not as secure as some due to its plastic construction; however, it does go in with four thumbscrews on the inside, it works with the seat out and it has two release levers that allow you to flip it up and use it as a beer holder :D

I painted mine all black. I also bought it used for $50.

When you put the top down on a soft top there is a nice little area below the folded top that is enclosed with the seats in. if you lock the rear door someone has to lift up the top to even see if there is anything back there. I haven't ever lost anything back there with the door locked. Nobody seems to ever think to lift up the top and see what is hiding beneath and there is about the same amount of room a insta-trunk would give. I know it is not secure but i have never lost anything this way.

I won mine, never installed it - sitting on the front porch
Frank's Jeep had one in it on purchase - it's on the front porch, too

....they didn't fit our Jeep'n style, but it may work well for others :)

I agree, I did that for awhile too with no problems. the soft top also has a nice compartment itself when folded. Good for that sweatshirt that you don't need anymore in the afternoon :p What I meant was, the add-a-trunk worked good for me when I had my soft top completely removed in summer, and I had my Jeep parked in some of the rougher areas. I wouldn't nessesarily leave a diamond ring in the trunk in the middle of downtown Baltimore or DC, but it works good if you got a nice sweatshirt you don't want to loose, or some school books that youd like to keep, and just want a cheap way to get a "out of sight, out of mind" thing when the tops gone. It does work with the seat out if you bolt it, but I don't think its really as effective. Besides, with the seat out, you have all the room, and only 1 foot of it is semi secure? Its nice to have if you can get one cheap, but its deffinately not on my "necessity" list.

Off topic, but when does rausch close for the season Texapple? I have been considering make a run before the snow really hits, if you and your husband and AD are game? Maybe get penguin_in_a_cj to stop paintballing every weekend, and come out with one of his... more street worthy.. jeeps :)

hey Tex, if you wanted to get rid of your trunk...how much would you want for it???:D

tobycat1 11-18-2007 10:26 PM

Look at the one i linked at the top, it is taller than the factory one( all the way to top of the tailgate) and it has a steel back to it so you can fold the back seat down :) Its very nice

I just picked one of these OEM ones up on craigslist for $40. It works w/o a seat just fine. It is made of plastic but would likely take some amount of time to bust it out and that's all you really try to do with a jeep is keep your goods out of sight and make it a little harder for the thief.
