rough country shocks

i just bought a set of shocks for my tj, the rough country 9000's part numbers 9304 and 9185. these things are junk! they gave me such a stiff ride that my cd player constantly skips and my sunglasses bounce of the dash just drivin down the road! im actually thinkin about putin my old blown out shocks back on so i feel a bit safer when driving!

orange05tj 11-19-2007 08:27 PM

hehe :) takes me only 10 minutes to spike it and i use about the same amount of gel others use. (i have my special ways though) Now its longer.. i'll take a pic tomorow if i dont forget and post it :D

As the shocks go, yes they are crap... any 1 know how to take those things apart? They are hydros so they wouldn't explode...

4bangertj 11-20-2007 10:05 PM

i emailed rough country tellin them how unhappy i was...well hear i'll just paste what i wrote and their response.

i wrote:
hello, i just purchased a set of your shocks from Jcwhitney outlet center sunday afternoon. they were the 9000 series for my 99 jeep wrangler. my wrangler has a 2 inch terra flex budget boost lift on it. i am very unhappy with how the vehicle rides now. its so stiff riding that my cd player skips and am unable to even put anything at all on my dash with out it bouncing off. these shocks have made my jeep unsafe in my opinion and they will be replaced the second i can afford to buy shocks of a different brand. i will never buy anything with the name "rough country"again

mike molleck

their response:

It is the same shock you would have gotten if you bough Pro Comp, Skyjacker, Fabtech, or Superlift, so there is no need to dislike our product and not anybody elses. You made a bad decision on shocks and if you would have ordered them from someone who knew instead of Whitney, we could have helped you with your decision, so dont blame us. The 9000 series is more of an offroad shock designed for the more hardcore in mind. The 8000 series is more for the daily driver/light offroader

i dont mean to qoute or anything like that but this is what their website says about the rc9000 shocks

___• Performance Proven 10-Stage Variable Valving
___• 200 psi Nitrogen Charged
___• Massive 1 3/8" Bore
___• Chromed Hardened 9/16" Piston Rod
___• Spring Loaded Piston Rod Seal
___• Military Spec. Fluid Rated To –50° C ___• Poly-urethane bushings for long life
___• Limited Lifetime Warranty
___• White powder coat finish
___
and last but not least the best part....
Smooth Highway Ride/Firm Off-Road

bluvikng 11-20-2007 10:27 PM

That is the reason for the rough ride, the nitrogen. It does create a very stiff, and unforgiving ride. I don't run any gas in my coilovers, for that very reason. Way to stiff.

BTW, I was just giving you a hard time in my previous post. I totally agree with you that any nitro shock is going to give you a severe ride.

Scout 11-20-2007 11:02 PM

I hate to rain on anyone's parade here but if you had done the slightest amount of research on any Rough Country kit you would have found out that their shocks are firm. That's what their kits are known for.

Triple88a 11-20-2007 11:11 PM

I wonder if you can take apart their hydro shocks. Seems like they might unscrew on top exposing the inside of the piston and alowing change of fluid. Maybe i'll give them a call.

i had a 00 xj with a 3inch rc kit on it and i was really pleased with the ride. thought id give them another chance...expensive mistake thats for sure!

Scout 11-21-2007 07:10 AM

Not really. The shocks aren't worth a whole lot in the first place. So basically it's not like you spent a ton of money on some expensive shocks and they're not what they're supposed to be. If you want good quality shocks you're going to need to pay for them. Look at OME, RE Monotubes or Bilstein.

acopsy88 11-21-2007 10:00 AM

I got a rc 4 inch kit and the shocks.. It rides like crap... but im not complaining... because a jeeps not a cadillac or lexus.. a jeep is a rednecks cadillac.. but if i were to do it again id buy the kit and different shocks that are softer... so in short maybe more research before you buy them i did the same thing but it is all good.. also they gave kind of a snobby answer and when i talked to their customer service they suck... so dont worry about it resale them on ebay get some of your money and buy some good shocks:punk: and this one is for their customer service:flipoff:

MOz 11-21-2007 10:30 AM

I can't say enough about my RE montubes.. The ride quality on and off raod is nothing short of awesome. Spend the extra cash, it's worth it.

4bangertj 11-21-2007 05:43 PM

well i am definetly goin to look into the places you guys have mentioned...well after christmas that is. thanks guys!
