JK front bumper removal tutorial
 
I found a good deal on a brush guard on Craigslist but to install it, the removal of the plastic BS was necessary. Therefore, I decided to take my time and do a step-by-step on the removal of the front bumper so you can see what it looks like in case you want to install a bull bar, brush guard, or new bumper.

First, in order to make it easier to access the backside of the front bumper, I removed the little fascia between the bumper and grill. It is simply held on by 2 plastic screws in grommets. Simply unscrew them and pop out the fascia.

Then it's time to remove the lower plastic air dam under the bumper. It's also held on by the same plastic screw/grommet thing so get all of those out. However, there are also 2 to remove behind the bumper

Once that is off, you can start on removing the bumper bolts. With these, there are 4 that hold on the plastic to the bumper and they just screw out with a ĺ” socket. There are also 8 nuts to remove which hold the actual bumper onto the chassis. Those are also ĺ” but there is a better-fitting metric equivalent socket. I also needed a 4” extension as well due to the recessed area behind the bumper. In addition, to make it easier to get the nuts to turn easier, I slid a cheater bar over my ratchet which allows for more torque and the nuts will break easier. It’s important to note that the tow hooks are what the nuts are attached to.

Once you remove all of those nuts (8 in all plus the 4 bolts for plastic bumper) the bumper will come right off and isn’t heavy at all. Probably weighs about 25 pounds at best. ***BEFORE REMOVING THE BUMPER, MAKE SURE THE WIRING CONDUIT HAS BEEN FREED FROM THE CHASSIS WHICH ARE LITTLE PLASTIC PLUGS THAT ARE INSERTED INTO SMALL HOLES. JUST PRY THEM UP. DON’T FORGET TO ALSO DISCONNECT THE WIRING PLUG FROM THE FOG LIGHTS. JUST DEPRESS THE TAB AND THEY COME RIGHT OFF.*****

Here is what the bumper looks like removed from the vehicle. You can now separate the THIN bumper from the useless plastic covering. If you plan to use the factory bumper, you can now go back and install it but before you do, attach it and tighten maybe a bolt on each side just to hold it on so you can test fitment of the new accessory you are attaching. I found I could not add my brush guard AND still have my tow hooks on at the same time. It pushed my guard out too far. Because of this, I had to buy 8 new bolts, washers, and nuts since the tow hook bolts are permanently attached to the hooks. Doesn’t matter since I will be changing out my bumper eventually so I can add D-rings and have a thicker bumper. In any case, I also had to drill out 2 holes on top to attach the guard but that’s fine. I also had to fabricate 2 brackets to secure the under portion of the brush guard.

Thatís basically all there is to taking off the bumper. Here is what my Jeep looks like with the brush guard attached. I decided to hack up my old bumper up to pieces to cover up the ends and will do the bumper cap mod on the sides. The middle I will leave alone until I get my winch. I will likely have to change that bumper out since the THIN factory bumper wonít be ideal to do any real pulling I figure. Anyone do this and have no issues? It just seems so thin to be able to provide any kind stability.

Your directions are better than many of those I've gotten with aftermarket parts.

Yes, your thin stock bumper is junk, and will pull nothing. Good excuse to get a new one.

I had to remove and reinstall my bumper so many times (due to issues with vac pump and winch install) that I'm now like a NASCAR pitcrew when I attack that thing.

Are you gonna have to take it off again to install new headlights?

The lights are ordered. Their harness guys is behind but I hope to have them by the weekend

As for getting the grill off I hope I can remove all winch bolts but one and pivot it out just enough to be able to remove the grill.

Does that set up work with the bumper skin on? I notice that you remove the tow hooks. Is there a way to make it work with the hooks? Are you going to leave those other 4 bolts off?

well for the guard I put on, the factory tow hooks will not work for me. Doesn't matter as I pointed out since I will be getting D-rings added when I get a thicker front bumper. As for the skin, no it also will not work but I am going to put the stubby ends on since the middle will be a place for a winch. I used some other bolts inplace of the ones that are part of the tow hooks. The bolts on the tow hooks cannot be seperated so I had to buy 8 more with washers and nuts.

(Sorry for bringing back an older thread, but at least i didn't start a new one on the same subject! :) )

I had some time this morning, so I started researching what I would need to do to remove my front bumper come modding time, and wouldn't you know it, a Google search leads me right back here! :D So cool.

I plan on stubbifying my bumper and want to bedline the whole assembly when it's finished.
Being able to remove/install it as one piece was something I was curious about.

Im sorry dude, but it seems to me that the brush guard was pretty much the opposite of an improvement. It doesnt work with tow hooks so you lost the ability to pull or be recovered from the front, it doesnt allow you to use the stock skin so now it looks naked in the front and you lost your factory fogs just to put in a set of shoddy aftermarket ones.... and you had to pay money for this....

Only thing that was positive is now you have some sort of protection on the front but it wont protect from much more then some branches or quite literally a bush.

Couldnt you have just kept the stock tow hooks, fog lights and bumper and waited till you had the money to buy a winch bumper with a stinger or actual DOM tube brush guard and tackled it all at once. That brush guard is not going to work with many aftermarket bumpers if any at all so you're going to have to dump it to do what you want in the future anyway.

Luckily I was careful removing the fasteners from my air dam, because when I went to try to remove the trim piece behind the bumper those two stripped right out and looked horrible. Replacements were close at hand, but lesson learned: Go into any activity involving those fasteners with a couple of extras at hand!

No they don't affect it really. But to answer the other response on why this brush guard, it was almost free which is why I took it from the other guy who also had it on his Jeep. Just wanted to do a mod that didn't ruin anything I did. But it really is temporary until I find the one I really want. I'd rather have this one on with some protection than that WORTHLESS plastic crap they include. The new one will have a winch plate and D-rings. Rock slider rails are ordered now.

took off my factory air dam and destroyed plastic screw pins made mistake and went to dealer to get 2 $4.69 each auto parts store $5.00 a bag of 6 beware they strip in a second and you end up prying them out just my experiance when adding winch

I have a stock 2008 JKU with factory bumper (non-US style). The plastic airdam has come lose on one side and is hanging down some. I would like to just remove the thing and leave it off the vehicle. Is its main purpose to aid gas mileage (via aerodynamics - i laugh a little typing that on a jeep forum) or for aiding airflow to the radiator for engine cooling?

If engine cooling is primary function then I'll have to get some fasteners and attach it but otherwise it looks ridiculous.

I believe people who attach aftermarket front skid plates have to remove the thing anyways? They dont seem to be reporting adverse affects to engine cooling.

I took mine of over a year ago and have had no problems with cooling. I think it aids in gas mileage as well as from redirecting air from blowing into the engine cabin which causes the hood to flop more at high speeds. I just recently replaced my hood latches with the daystar polyurethane latches and my hood doesnt flop at all now.

Good write up. I followed the instructions but the bolts on my 08 are rusted pretty bad. I sprayed some stuff to try to break them loose easier and still rounded one of the bolts. Sucks because I have a small dent in front of one of the crush cans that I'd like to pound out. :(

Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for the 2 plastic screws in grommets on the fascia? I stripped one of the screws and need to replace on my 2012 JK Front Bumper.

Those things are junk. Take them off once & you won't get them tight again. Get rid of them


Pickup some real nuts & bolts. Way too cheap to not do so. If you spend more than $5 at Home Depot or Lowes I would be amazed. Self tapping screws are just as effective if you are a fan of those. I'm not but they work.

If you REALLY want to get those the dealer can probably get them for you new. I can check tonight to see if any of my take-offs are in good condition & can send to you for postage - if you REALLY want them.

Yes, they are junk. I quickly blew through mine when prepping to install a light bar. The screw heads stripped the second I touched my screwdriver to them. If I did get them to turn, they never loosened. I had to drill them and pry them off.

Although, I'm not going to get nuts & bolts... seems like too much overkill to hold some plastic in place.

I'm going with some old-school nylon trim panel clips from the hardware store and call it a day. Should work fine.
