Rear End

I think I may have broken my rear end gear today! Any idea how much its going to cost me to fix it. It will move in 4 wheel drive.

dwdrums801 11-21-2007 09:03 PM

does it move in 2wd?

tobycat1 11-21-2007 09:06 PM

If he broke the rear gears, then it wont move in 2wd

Rawkon 11-21-2007 09:21 PM

how did you brake it and what are the symptons

crj101 11-21-2007 09:28 PM

Running about 75mph on I-65 when it let loose with a metal breaking & clanging noise. It will not pull in 2 wheel drive. Drive shaft is still in place and turns when jeep rolls.

AzTJ 11-21-2007 09:40 PM

It'll cost as much as a regear, about $500 for the rear alone, depending on what need replacing.

crj101 11-21-2007 09:44 PM

What will I get for $500? I talked to a buddy today that works in a junkyard a he said the same money but we didn't have time to get into details, I wasn't sure which rear end I have.

tobycat1 11-21-2007 09:49 PM

Dana 35 i think

AzTJ 11-21-2007 10:15 PM

The $500 would be for new gears and whatever is busted inside, and maybe more on labor if you take it to a shop. But if you get a whole new axle, expect to spend a lot more.

Rawkon 11-21-2007 11:15 PM

prolly the spiders. pop open that rear diff cover and snap a pic.

its a sahara so it could be the 44...could be either though.

debruins 11-22-2007 10:29 PM

if he popped it with only 30's then it is a D35 unless he had done some serious off roading like ten minutes before

and int hat case dont keep putting money into it, get a new axle, it may cost $2-3K, but if theis time it costs 700 and next time it costs 700....

mrbigjeep 11-23-2007 12:03 PM

its not an axleshaft though...

crj101 11-24-2007 02:41 PM

I don't do any 4 wheelin, this is my primary vehicle I drive it to and from work (about 75 miles round trip) and do a little in town driving.

upinar 11-24-2007 04:52 PM

like he said, pull the bolts on the rear end and snap a pic of the inside and we can tell you exactly whats wrong with it and how much it will cost.

x2 anything else would be just speculation..

crj101 11-29-2007 12:03 AM

Well it turns out I have exploded a gear in the transfer case and not the rear end. So whats a transfer case going to cost me?

mr4x4 11-29-2007 12:23 AM

I have 2 transfer cases out of 97 TJ's, both from manual trans 6 cyl, both had 50-55k on them when pulled.
one has the Advanced Adapters HD SYE installed $400 + shipp
one is stock $200 + shipping
located in Las Vegas, NV
