98 TJ long arm build
 
I have finally start to build the long arms on the rear first as the uppers ripped off the frame so i had to repair or replace it anyway. So far all the brackets i have gotten are from Artec Industries in Az. I am planning to reuse all my jj and the few ballistic joints i have and any new ones will be the Currie jj.

Hey, while you're in there, I would suggest doing the weld-on coil bucket relocation kit for that upper mount, makes the jeep feel a lot more solid and it's cheap.

that lower mount looks like it hangs real low. have you looked at moving inside the frame rails to get it up out of the way?

I had thought about it at first but i have looked at all the ones around here that i wheel with and they dont seem to get in the way that i have been able to see. I also have 35's so the ground clearance is pretty good. It does mostly the moderate trails as its the wifes. i have an xj for the really hard stuff. This one is built to do the harder trails but she is not at that level yet. Still learning what it and she can do. She is coming along well tho. My upper are going to be mount pretty closes to where the lowers are.

We finally got some free time to work on the lower arms and got them welded up and in place just need to paint them up. then the uppers so this thing can be on the road again.

How did you know how long to make the arms?
I'm just staring to work on a 9" for the rear of my TJ. Is there a trick to figuring out the right length and angles?

The jeep had a 44 already so I left the lower mounts on the axle then tried to figure out where I wanted to mount them on the frame for me I leaving the stock cross member so my mounts are welded up close to that. Made sure the axle cleared the gas tank when it traveled up and measured the lowers from there and left some adjustment to them. Then I did a triangulation from the top of the center of the axle out to the frame. The upper frame mounts are pretty much in line with the lowers. So I put the springs and lowers on and set it at ride height and set the pinion angle I had before and measured with room to adjust. I am finishing a few other things while it's in the garage so it's not been on the rode yet. Maybe tomorrow. There are a lot of threads on here and I found some on pirate too. There is a more scientific way to do it. I also check out just about every long arm on the market to see what I liked or could use for my build. I will get some better pic up later tonight as I am getting under it now.

Well it moved under it own power tonight. Just needs exhuast now so have not drivin it but in the driveway it's rather loud.

So how long did you make your lower arms?
are you going to long arm the front, or long radius arm the front?

The lowers are about 29 in or so but i still need to do some final adjustments to it. and yes i plan to do the front. I am leaning more to the radius setup but still checking out things. but for now i can get it out of the garage so i can work on my cherokee and get the d44 under the front. At least the wife can take the TJ out now it is really hers anyway. With any luck the front will not take as long to build once i figure out which way i want to go.

I'm hope'n your right, on the front not take'n as long. I'm about to start a radius arm/d44 swap on my tj. I'm really hope'n to not have many issues.

I think it will go quicker cuz you can place the lower frame mount where you want or need it to be and measure for the arms and make them and install then cut off old mount and it's still drivable the you can measure for the uppers and there is less down time and it can still be driven.

Ok here it is pretty much finished with the rear all thats left for the most part is to get it aligned and pinion exactly where it needs to be but i have not drivin down the street due to no exhaust so its on the trailer now to head to the shop tomorrow.

No I did a triangulated four link in the rear no track bar. And the front is for link soon to be a radius arm setup.

Double triangulated? That's what I built for mine that and a3 link front I'm definitely happy how it flexes and drives. Post up a couple pix.

Just the upper is triangulated. It's the wife's so did not want to get too out of the box for when she street drives it. It does work great and it's built way beyond her capabilities. I will post some picks tomorrow.

Finally got the wj knuckle and brake conversion done and drove it to work today. Brakes work way better. Did not seem to have any bump steer so not sure on whether I am relocating track bar or maybe put a shorter pitman arm to get them the same angle.

I was thinking of trying that first. As I have one. And I would need to get all the stuff to make a new tb and bracket. I may get it on there tonight. Post back results later.

Might need to put a bend in it also. What size lift are you running? I'm running stock pitman arm with 4.5" lift with new tb bracket on the frame.

It has 6 in lift. I started to change the pitman arm tonight and my puller broke. So I will get another tomorrow. It was a cheapo harbor freight one anyway. If this does not get it where I want it I will get the axle side bracket and make a new like I did on my Cherokee.
