I am a DUMB A** kid an need some help with my 2001 jeep wrangler sahara
 
Dont know where to start, but my current project is changing the transmission gear oil. i have read lots of different threads but they all just confused me more. I have a 5 speed NV3550 transmission. I have read to put 10-30w and 75w-80. I want my transmission to shift better. its horrible trying to shift when its cold. Also i have heard that i need a special additive because i have a clutch pack, the way i know that is because i know i havethe traclock dana 44. this is what (I think) I know after reading alot. can any one help me lol

When in doubt, consult the owners manual and use the Mopar recommended fluid, which for your NV3550 is 4.9 pints of Mopar Manual Transmission Lubricant NSG370/NV3500 part number 04874464. Having said that Amsoil Synchromesh Transmission Fluid 5W-30 is a fine choice, if you want synthetic.

Either of the above fluids or personally I prefer RedLine MTL (Manual Transmission Lube), I've used it in sports cars as well as my Jeep and it's great.
As for tools -- you will need a special large-size Allen head socket as well as a fluid pump to get the new fluid up and into the trans. Other threads cover the details on this-- but the cheapest place you'll find to pick up these items is a Harbor Freight store or their web site.

It is a Jeep. This is normal. It should shift better once the car has warmed up.

I went with Mobil1 10w-30 High Mileage (4 quarts) and have no regrets so far (did the fluid change last weekend). Pretty easy.

Make sure you have a fluid pump (check Advance Auto or equivalent) and the right sockets for removing the drain and fill holes. My drain took a 24mm socket (had to special order) and a T55 Torx for the fill (had to special order). But don't take my word for it, check your transmission first to determine the right sockets needed as the previous poster said. It seems like there are a number of different fittings for the fill plug, the majority of which are allen.

remove the 'fill' plug 1st. if you remove the drain 1st, then find out the fill is froze--you're screwed

You mention the special additive, clutch pack and the Dana 44. That is the rear differential. If you have a limited slip diff, there is a friction modifer that you need to add if the gear oil you buy doesn't already have it.

where does the friction modifer go in, an ive read were people say the clutch pack goes out after 50000 miles any way of knowing, or would i realize somethings wrong

Its a nice thought BUT you can when they write the wrong oil which they did in owners manuals for some years with the AX15 from what I have read

Good job on asking first instead of just putting whatever fluid you find in it, always good to do your homework :thumb:

Main thing to remember is that when all else fails, & you're not sure what to do for your Jeep; consult the owners manual or a reputable dealership :flowers:

You put in friction modifier with your fluid when you fill it back up. Put it in first so you make sure you can get it all in there. As far as knowing when it goes out ? Well for one it won't work! Usually it will make noise when they go out also.

The fill/drain plugs are 17mm. You can use a 17mm bolt and visegrips to remove them also.
I used the Royal Purple also. It helped with shifting, but like already said it's a truck tranny, you have to shift slowly.

For those making transmission fluid recommendations, keep in mind that '99 and older AX-15 transmissions and all AX-5 transmissions have different lubricant requirements than the 2000 and newer NV3550 does. So no, the NV3550 does not use 75W-90 GL-4 gear lube, 10W-30 engine oil, or Redline MT-90 like the AX-5 and AX-15 do.

The NV3550 uses more of a 70W-80 gear lube or 5W-30 engine oil which is met by using Redline MTL or Royal Purple Synchromax. I would not use GM or Pennzoil Synchromesh even though it technically meets the NV3550's specifications... not everyone likes how the transmission shifts after using that lube.

Hey a person who asks a question is a fool for five minutes, a person who doesn't is a fool forever. Nobody's dumb it's a fun hobby/learning experience I've been working on Nissans for 9 years and I can do anything on them lol got my jeep and its another ball park I'm just glad we have nice honest people on this forum to turn to. I know it's helped me alot!
