How big can I go without a lift?

Hey everyone. I'm new to ALL of this lol. I just bought a red 2010 wrangler unlimited. 4dr hard top. I'm about to go pick It up from the dealer in a couple days but I wanted to go straight to put wheels on it. I really like the rockstars but the smallest they come is 18" what do you guys recommend as far as tires for those wheels, without having to put a lift kit on it. This is gonna be my everyday car. I live in Miami so there is not really any big off roading going on. Maybe the occasional mud just for fun but nothing major. I really just want it to look nice. Anything helps! Thank you :)

33x12.5" tires max. Rims need 3.75"-4.5" backspacing. The tires will rub the fenders if you get the suspension flexing off-road.

Kristy_2407 01-20-2012 11:01 AM

Thanks! Yeah from what I have read I think I have to put spacers if I go with the rims that I want. Do you know how it will ride with spacers? And what tires do you recommend for the ride to stay as smooth and stock-like as possible?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm completely new and have no idea what any of these numbers and crap mean lol.

33" tall and 12.5" wide tires. The tire shop can let you know the exact size that is close to that. My friend has rockstars with spacers and some tire shops won't touch wheels with spacers for liability reasons. We had to load his wheels on my trailer so discount tire would put new tires on. If you go with larger tires you will lose some gas mileage/power and aggressive tires will make more noise on the road.

Kristy, rock stars might look cool (and I agree they kinda do) but 18s? There are plenty of wheels that are 16-17" that look just as good, cost less, less complications on the install and you'll have more tire options for your purpose.

desertgoose 01-20-2012 11:27 AM

What he said^

On 18's you could get 305/60/18 sized tires to fit. The higher the rim size, the more expensive the tires will be.

It seems that tires for 17" rims are more common and less expensive than 16" rims now. :banghead:

Thanks desertgoose.

1CrzyCelt. Yea I get what you mean. Sucks thats the smallest they come but I think I'm gonna look around for some 17" that I would like. What kind of tires do you recommend for it to look good but still ride good and not so much noise?

desertgoose 01-20-2012 11:38 AM

It depends if you want looks over function. I really like the tires I have on mine, but my friends always give me a hard time because of the mild tread pattern. I would definitely recommend some sort of all-terrain for what you are looking for.

Kristy_2407 01-20-2012 11:44 AM

Yea I mostly just want it for looks. I don't go off roading at all but a to me, a jeep is not a jeep without bigger looking tires. I just want it to look good, and ride smooth with the least noise as possible.

Don't know if I'm asking for a miracle lol

desertgoose 01-20-2012 11:47 AM

Goodyear Duratracs look good and not too loud. They are kinda between an all terrain and mud terrain tread pattern. That's what I'm getting next. You can also look at the BFG All terrain t/a. There's so many different brands and styles I couldn't start to cover them.

Thanks so much. I guess I have a lot of research to do.

Since my jeep is red I have these picked out so far

Personally, I seem to always want something that I don't see everyone else with. You might want to check BFG rugged terrain. They're a cross between their touring and All Terrain tires. They look tuff, they're big, but are designed for the lighter duty that you describe. You can easily find them for 16" and 17" wheels. If you have a membership at a Sam's Club or Costco or similar store, you should be able to get them fairly cheap.

Kristy_2407 01-20-2012 01:25 PM

Thanks. And I do have memberships to both those places so I'll check them out :)

Ok so I think I've decided on the ballistic off road jester wheel, 8 spoke with red inserts and the 33" duratracs.

Those rims have a 4.5 bs. So I think I should be ok with rubbing.

What do you guys think as far as the look, and ride of those?

I actually like the look of the Jesters. 17"? Can't tell you anything about the duratracs, but there are plenty on here who can.

desertgoose 01-20-2012 06:17 PM

Pic didn't load on my phone. But the duratracs have great reviews! Rims are just personal preference.
